Joe Morgan to lead Oktoberfest chicken dance

Reds great and Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Morgan will lead the annual World’s Largest Chicken Dance at Oktoberfest next Saturday.

Morgan, a 10-time All-Star and MVP in 1975 and 1976 when the Reds won back-to-back World Series titles, is the second former Red to lead the Chicken Dance, joining Joe Nuxhall, who did it in 2007.

“Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati has long been regarded as the largest Oktoberfest celebration in North America and the second largest in the world,” said Patrick Sheeran, vice president with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. “But in the long and storied history of the event, we have never had a chicken dancer with so much on the job experience.”

Early in his career, Morgan had trouble with his swing because he kept his back elbow down too low. Teammate Nellie Fox suggested that Morgan should flap his back arm like a chicken to keep his elbow up. He followed the advice, and Morgan’s flapping chicken arm soon became a familiar sight to baseball fans.

Nicknamed for his diminutive 5'7" stature, "Little Joe"

Joe should have never invented that nickname.

Surmising that this might be a single blip in what promises to be anything but a "all hail Morgan" thread...might I just interject that Joe Morgan was a fabulous 2B and hitter/walker?

We now resume our previously scheduled Morgan slam....

Joe Morgan...he owes me money!!! ARrrrrrrggghhhh!!!!

I've always liked the fact that the Senators of the late 60s and early 70s felt they had no use for Joe Morgan because ... well what comes up in practically every one of the scouting reports is some variation of "he's not very tall"

Direct quote from the scouting report filed before the 1977 season (after two straight MVPs) "Somewhat limited because of small body."

Traditional Oktoberfests start in September and end in the first weekend of October. It's part of German immigrants' larger Do What We Say Festival.

I'm pretty sure that when my wife was growing up in New Braunfels, TX, Wurstfest (referenced in the video above) was usually in November. Of course, they called it "Wurstfest" and not "Oktoberfest." But the same general idea.
