Joe Panik to Mets? New York Daily News make case for ex-Giants infielder

After six years with the Giants, second baseman Joe Panik was designated for assignment Tuesday in an expected, yet difficult move. Panik has struggled at the plate throughout the 2019 season, and Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was able to pull the trigger on a deal with the Reds to acquire Scooter Gennett—also a second baseman—before the July 31 MLB trade deadline.

With Panik expected to decline the option of being outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, he is set to become a free agent. There does appear to be one team—or at least one local media outlet—that sees Panik as an ideal fit.

Panik is a Yonkers, N.Y. native and played his college baseball at St. Johns University in Queens, less than 10 miles from Citi Field where the Mets play their home games.

It seems guaranteed that this would be a disaster for the Mets- the question is, what sort of disaster would it be?

Wouldn't the Mets be better off using McNeil at second? I don't really see what's in it for them, here.

Is the problem not that that leads to more Lagares? Panik isn't great of course, but at -0.4 he's a full win ahead of Lagares so far this year.

This.

Right now, Lagares couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Yet, somehow, the Marlins managed to walk him 3 times the other day. That's so Marlins...

Is there no OF that can be acquired? Some AAAA guy on a milB contract would work.

Edit: Hell, the Mets have some 30 y.o. named Travis Taijerson who's 10th in the Int'l league in OPS. Bring him up.

This was supposed to be the point where Tim Tebow would magically save their season, but he's injured.

There is/was a lot of call in Mets land for Panik or a reunion with Asdrubal Cabrubal, who instead, chose to sign an MLB (!) contract with the hated Nationals.

Who gave Rosario PEDs over the AS break? 360/400/562 with a meager 397 BABIP.

Anyway, the poor roster construction continues to bite them. Still nobody for CF (been a few years now), McNeil, Smith and Davis chased off what are probably their more natural positions to LF (with McNeil now mostly in RF) yet still not enough OF depth ... including apparently so little at AAA that Joe Panik starts to look like a solution to paper over until Smith is back. Let d'Arnaud go for nothing (and then several other teams missed on that ... Cubs could sure use him right now). About the only defense I can muster is that there were no actual good CF solutions on the market this deadline and the best you could do was gamble on a different little-hit, good glove that you hope didn't turn into Lagares right after acquiring him.
