Joe Posnanski Leaving The Athletic

So, Mike Schur and I just finished recording what will be the last PosCast we do for The Athletic. I realize looking at that sentence that it sounds much more ominous than I intend for it to sound … we’ve had a blast at The Athletic. I’ve had a blast at The Athletic. They’re good people. But I’ll be leaving The Athletic a bit later this summer and, as such, we’re taking the PosCast and I’m taking my writing to new lands.

A well-traveled writer gets a little more well-traveled.

It's got to be at least a little awkward now that he's publishing some of his Athletic columns as a book.

That sucks - I’ve been waffling on whether to renew. I like them but rosenthal has turned into a social justice warrior, posnanksi is leaving, and the other MLB writers are meh. It’s still got great hockey coverage which Is keeping me in.

Who will write the Joe Paterno apologies now?

How strange that the best sportswriter of his generation has so rarely stayed with one publisher for longer than a year or two.

As I too ponder whether to re-up my Athletic subscription, I am left to contemplate whether this marks the beginning of the end, or if it's just Poz doing what Poz does and bouncing around. I'm going to assume the latter for now, but keep an eye out for the former.

I mean, the linked blurb is practically verbatim what he posted when he announced he was leaving each of his last, like, four employers. It might as well be a form letter.

There's been a lot of speculation about the financial health of The Athletic in recent months, and allegedly they're close to being purchased by The New York Times, so maybe that's playing a role in this decision.

It really is strange how much Posnanski has moved around. I was so happy when he came to The Athletic, since I had a subscription already and it meant I'd get to keep reading all of his stuff. He's good enough that I'll most likely follow him wherever he goes, but I also worry that this came about because the Athletic is cutting costs and his contract was too high to renew.

I would guess writing a sports column doesn't pay a lot these days so there's little reason to stay in one house for decades.

There doesn't seem to be much of an appetite for national baseball writers anymore. A generation ago, SI would have been a natural pinnacle. But Pos landed there on the tail end. The Sporting News is ancient history. ESPN doesn't have a ton of baseball columns anymore. Who's left?

Barstool.

The Poscast with Joe and Michael Schur is very good. They focus on fun/funny things from the world of baseball. Fair warning, they do giggle at themselves quite a bit, it's like the sports version of "Car Talk".
