Joe Posnanski: Royals scout Stewart taking another swing at love

Art had met Rosemary at a big Lutheran church in Chicago. She was quite a bit younger than him — he was 31, she was only 19 — but there was a beautiful chemistry between them, that thing couples used to call “the flame.” When “My Fair Lady” ended, as the bundled mass headed out into the streets, Art asked Rosemary to marry him. She said yes. They set a date. They had the invitations made. They reserved the church. They tried to rush into their marriage and a life together before their senses took hold the way young people in love do.

And then, one day, a month before the wedding date, their senses took hold. Rosemary knew she was too young to get married. Art knew that he needed to live a baseball life, he needed to be on the road, chasing baseball talent, and it was no life for a young bride. They decided, technically, to put off the wedding for a while. But they both knew what they were really doing. They were breaking up.

Six months later, Art Stewart was at a ballgame, and he saw another scout making a move on a beautiful young woman. He heard the woman spurn him by saying, “There’s only one team, and that’s the New York Yankees.” Art worked for the New York Yankees at the time. He stepped in.

She's a rich girl, he's the son of a Coca-Cola middleman.

"There’s only one team, and that’s the New York Yankees."

Don't people get bored with all their practices and intra-squad games?

Maybe I'm way off, but that is a really bizarre column from Pos. I get it - guy finds true love, timing is off, marries another woman, wife dies, man reunites with first love. Just seems like Joe structured the story very oddly, trying to intertwine baseball with it.

Anyway, in regards to Art, good for him. Joe obviously likes the guy (he wrote a whole SI column on the winter meetings with Art as a focus point even though the Royals were very quiet). I kinda wish Joe would make friends with one of the Royals new front office guys like Jim Wong or JJ Piccolo. I can't help but think the game is starting to pass Art by. Its not like his scouting department was turning out great prospects in the 90s under his leadership like they had in the 70s and 80s. Jeff Austin, Jim Pittsley, Jeff Granger, Colt Griffin...how did those guys turn out? And there is a running gag at Royals Review about what Art said about the first time he saw Chris Lubanski - "You will remember this day for the rest of your life." Joe probably shouldn't be using Art so much as a source for scouting opinion.

you mean that Joe Poz won't go into writing romance novels?

Man, that's harsh. To think that you're having a transcendent, defining career moment and to be so utterly wrong.

if poz wrote romance novels, i would go and read them. i even read what he writes about football (which i just HATE) just because i love reading what he writes.

Kind of reminds me of Woody Huyke's quote about Chad Hermansen walking on water.

I guess you could spin that it's about stalking, which qualifies.

Does the woman learn karate and turn the tables, or does she learn to love again while on vacation in a charmingly decaying European city, only to have the stalker reappear at the moment she's at maximum bliss with her new love?

To be fair, the Lifetime article might also be about someone having their children taken away. Which gets recommended more often than you might think around here.

As far as Lifetime movies, nothing can top A Dog Took My Face And Gave Me A Better Face To Change The World: The Celeste Cunningham Story
