Johnny Damon Arrested In Florida On DUI Charges

Former Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon was arrested in Florida early Friday morning and is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence.

Damon was arrested by Windermere Police around 8:15 a.m. and booked on charges for driving under the influence and resisting an officer without violence. The 47-year-old had a blood alcohol level above .20, according to police reports.

Damon played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball, including four seasons with the Boston Red Sox. He was a key part of the team’s 2004 World Series championship team and was a fan favorite for his big swings in the playoffs, diving catches in the outfield and his long, flowing hair.

8am? Usually people both awake and drunk at that hour have been helped by stimulants.

Surely there must be a better way to live up to the Idiots nickname.

Dude can't spring for an uber? Seriously?

Normally I'd respect having a .20 blood alcohol level(!!!) at 8 AM on a weekday. Way to ruin it Johnny.
   4. reech Posted: February 19, 2021 at 12:36 PM (#6005824)
That's triple the blood alcohol level.
He shouldn't have been able to walk, much less drive.

Unless he's an alcoholic, and was coked up too.

Other reports say 1 am, not 8 am. That seems more likely.
   7. JJ1986 Posted: February 19, 2021 at 12:46 PM (#6005830)
Next he's going to be signing with the White Sox.

I had a friend in college who's dad owned a bar. He gets pulled over. He does all the tests correctly. THe fingers in front of your face, the balancing on one foot thing. The follow the light thing. The cop is still not sure. "Im gonna give you a breathalyzer anyways. "

0.23 BAC. Yeah Im not kidding. If you're used to the stuff i guess you can function sort of.

I wonder how many ballplayers have had a BAC higher than their batting average.
   10. Itchy Row Posted: February 19, 2021 at 12:56 PM (#6005834)
TMZ has more. His wife was arrested too.
While Johnny was booked for DUI, Michelle was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
While at the station, cops say Johnny agreed to take a breathalyzer test, but noted his wife was advising him against it. Ultimately, cops say Johnny gave two valid breath samples, .30 and .294.
Both are better than his lifetime .284 BA.

If Don Carmen blew a BAC equal to his batting average, I guess he'd be good to go: 12-for-209 lifetime, all singles, .057 BA.

Well, it's nice that he was drinking with his wife at least.
The family that drinks and gets arrested together stays together?

Windermere is where Orlando's rich folk live. So for him to actually be arrested means he pissed off the cops big time.

Awesome start to the write-up from the Daily News:

Johnny Damon, having already loudly supported Donald Trump and whined about coronavirus restrictions, completed the retired baseball player Triple Crown on Friday with a DUI in Florida.

Johnny gave two valid breath samples, .30 and .294.

If that is confirmed by blood test, it's a truly staggering level of alcohol. I think that's getting into alcohol poisoning territory. He must be a serious alcoholic.

This is the kind of DWI that should bring serious prison time. IIRC the "super drunks" ( like over .2 BAC) cause a large majority of DWI deaths.
   16. The Duke Posted: February 19, 2021 at 01:41 PM (#6005848)
Well, he had an outside Hall case. This won’t help. But it is a prodigious BAC. Does the hall of fame monitor have a category for this stat ?

Wouldn't be a Florida story without something like this:

The two-time MLB All-Star said he and his wife were driving from “London House,” which he described as “a guy who had a lot of money, to uh, I don’t know, take care of taxes,” according to the report.

“We’re just having a good time there,” he said.

I am picturing Alfred Molina in a bathrobe.

I suppose a chronic hangover could explain the lack of, er, swiftness.

.20 is doable and you can sort of function/stagger/manage(not drive mind you, but stagger home on foot)

.30 is wicked. You can barely walk, if you're not passed out already, much less operate a motor vehicle.

Surely you all have still been drunk at 8:00am after consuming too much until the wee hours of the morning(say 4:00am)?

I once drank tequila until about 4am, had to get up and do a training run with the uni track team at 7:00am the next day and seemed to be sweating tequila(I stunk like a bottle of the stuff). I got about a mile and a half in and that was that. Coach was unimpressed.

You know what they say coach ... if you're gonna compete drunk, you should train drunk.

I remember a Scott Podsednik anecdotes from his Brewers days. He's out on a date with some pretty little thing. I think a sideline reporter or something. They walk into the restaurant. She goes to the bathroom. He goes up to the bar and orders 4 beers. He does the two fisted thing where he's holding all 4 in two hands and proceeds to pound them all while she's in the bathroom. She comes out and they go and sit-down and order like it is a regular dinner date. Somewhere around dessert she goes to the bathroom and he again goes to the bar and pounds 4 more beers. Was not shocked to see his skills declined quickly.

i bet neither one serves time or gets their license yanked. this is what happens when you got the $$$ to hire expensive lawyers. it sure is what happens here

looked it up - A 160-pound man would have a BAC of 0.30 by drinking 11 drinks in an hour. and damon weighs a lot more than that so he had to drink like a almost a whole bottle of likker to get that drunk. at least he didn't murder someone.

looked it up

lary is 65. he got a liver made of steel

had SEVEN DUIs and served a year or so in actual prison the last 2 times. at least he didn't murder anyone while drunk. hard to bleeve anyone could have that much al k holl in his body and still live. unless he just has not got caught looks like he been sober 10 years now
   35. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: February 19, 2021 at 10:42 PM (#6005948)
I would be careful with those online BAC calculators. The first one I checked said a 205-lb (Damon’s listed weight at BB-Ref) man would have a .30 BAC by having 11 drinks in 3 hours. For someone 170 lbs (my weight) the equivalent would be 9 drinks in 3 hours. That’s a lot, no doubt, but I think you can have an occasional night like that and not be an alcoholic. However, if you drive after a night like that, you probably have a problem.

They've also got her for attacking a police office. Now, I'm sure there's a difference between swinging your handbag at a cop while he's putting on the cuffs (I don't know that that's what happened, but something like that seems likely given the scenario) and going after him with a baseball bat, but she is potentially facing more than the DUI.

When I was 25, eh, maybe. Now, I'd be dead.

well zig,

she's a very rich White woman. and unless she tried to shoot or stab the cop, won't nothing happen to her except maybe "community service"

the very rich White woman i know of who got arrested for driving drunk and "attacking a cop" - with her fists i guess - kind of like a baby hitting the Rock, got a nice expensive lawyer, bailed out in the morning, NOTHING on her license which was not pulled, and a few months probation which if she completed, went off her record

this is how rich White people roll. every time any one of them actually gets punished in any serious way, i'm pretty shocked - like those rich people buying their stupid kids a place in some party skool. and you KNOW they ain't goin to no huntsville prison. too bad, but that's the way things are

Johnny Damon, circa 2009:

Johnny Damon speaks to the media today in Tampa following A-Rod's presser: "Yeah he did some bad things. He took a steroid. Definitely do not condone that, at all, but there could be a lot worse things he could have been doing out there. He hasn't done a crime. So there's worse things that he could have done but you know I've known Alex since he was 15 and he's always been super nice to me and so I'm going to support him and try help him through this time.(Reporter: Johnny, what would have been worse?) Murdering someone... There's plenty of things that could be worse than what he did. (Reporter: In your mind, is what he did cheating?) For part time in his career, perhaps, but you know what, the pitchers that were facing him too at the time were doing it."
