Jordan Zimmermann announces his retirement from baseball

It took Jordan Zimmermann more than 12 years in the majors to finally get a chance to pitch for his home-state team, but that lure wasn’t strong enough to continue his long and successful career.

After only two appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Auburndale native announced Tuesday he is retiring from baseball. And, unlike his “two-hour retirement” a couple weeks ago, this time Zimmermann means it.

“I have had the joy of playing the game that I love for the past 15 years,” Zimmermann said in a statement released by the club. “I will forever be thankful to the Washington Nationals and Detroit Tigers for allowing me to live out this dream. It has been particularly special to be able to end it all playing for my hometown team, the Milwaukee Brewers.

“Thank you to all of my friends, teammates and family members who have been by my side throughout this incredible journey. I will miss the game greatly, but I’m ready for the new phase of my life.”

Zimmermann, who will be 35 on May 23, pitched twice in relief for the Brewers, who added him to their roster April 29. Both times came in mop-up roles – 3⅔ innings on May 2 in a 16-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and two innings Friday night in a 6-1 defeat in Miami.

I remember thinking what an absolute bargain Detroit was getting when they signed him.

“I will forever be thankful to the Detroit Tigers for allowing me to spend millions of dollars on hookers and blow whilst doing exactly bupkis on the mound for them. Suckers!"

Jordan Zimmermann finishes his career with an identical 7.94 ERA in his last two seasons. Neat.

A nice little career. 21 BWAR, couple of top 10 Cy finishes, nearly 100 wins(if that's your thing and I'm sure for Jordan, it's important) and of course over $142 million in earnings. Needless to say if you are pretty good at baseball and last a few years you can earn some serious coin.
