J.T. Realmuto carries the ball for all catchers in groundbreaking arbitration case

Any way you slice it, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto is headed for a historic contract in 2020.

Realmuto and the Phillies began the salary arbitration process with an exchange of proposals on Friday.

The Phillies filed at $10 million.

Realmuto’s camp came in at $12.4 million.

A consideration of catcher value across the board- purely financial here, but something of broader interest given the complexities of assessing them.

the complexities of assessing them

It's gonna get a lot less complex once Skynet takes over balls and strikes.

FTFA:

Realmuto is in his third and final year of arbitration. To date, the highest paid catcher in that class was Matt Wieters, who avoided a hearing with Baltimore and made $8.275 million 2015. Catcher Mike Napoli actually made more -- $9.4 million – in a negotiated settlement with the Texas Rangers in 2012, but he was in his fourth year of arbitration because of his Super-Two status with the Anaheim Angels in 2009.

Mike Piazza asked for $7.65mil and the Dodgers offered $6.1mil when he was Arb2 and signed for 2/$15mil the 5th highest AAV at the time.

Realmuto is barely ahead by the US inflation rate which would equate to $12.26mil and $9.78mil arbitration submissions, let alone the far higher rate of baseball salary inflation since that contract, let alone Piazza having one less year of service time.

Through their first 5 seasons:

Piazza: 31 bWAR
Realmuto: 17.6 bWAR

Even if you exclude Piazza’s monster fifth year he has a huge lead.

Aw hell, that is how it starts, isn't it? And here we thought it was going to be Boston Dynamics.

Hard to see how Napoli got such nice awards. In Anaheim, he had never started more than 84 games at C and had only one season in which he started over 100 games overall, a year he split between C and 1B/DH (when Kendrys got hurt if I recall). He did have a monster 2011 in Texas but that was still just 102 starts, only 57 at C. He got only 102 starts the next year too (69 at C ... he would never play there again). It is weird to see a player who gets so few starts get a top arb award.

For his career, Napoli had fewer than 500 starts at C.

Aw hell, that is how it starts, isn't it? And here we thought it was going to be Boston Dynamics.

After it is revealed later this year that Alex Cora (2057) used a time machine to come back and fix the 2018 World Series for the Red Sox, the ensuing scandal is so shameful that the Red Sox change their name in 2022.

A-Rod is much better than Jeter, so is Jeter's $189mil contract "historic" and "groundbreaking"?
