Justin Verlander heading to Mets (source)

This is a much better option for the Mets.

After losing Jacob deGrom to the Rangers in free agency over the weekend, the Mets are reportedly reaching an agreement with another top free-agent arm in Justin Verlander, a source told MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi. SNY’s Andy Martino was the first to report the deal. Per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and others, the contract is for two years and $86 million, with a third-year vesting option.

Huge Verlander fan.

Will deeply dislike seeing him pitch for the Mets.

Cohen is such a cheapskate.

Upton-approved!

That's a lot of dough.

yes, better contract fit for Mets.

Max and JV, DET 2010-14:
JV 83-43, 2011 Cy
Max 82-33, 2013 Cy

Verlander and Max together? Get Porcello out of retirement!

43. Wow.

I wonder if there wasn't a way to spread this out more to mitigate the luxury tax hit. (Assuming the Mets go over. I don't know the state of their finances.) If you're talking about signing a multi year deal with a pitcher who is over 40, why not make him a Met for life. Sign him through age 48 or something, at much lower AAV. With the assumption that you'll release him once he's no good anymore. (Or does that retroactively mess with luxury tax calculations?)

Looks like I was 100% wrong about the top starters not getting $40 mil+.

2 years for JV is alot less a gamble than 5 for JD.

LFGM!

I'd also prefer the 2 year JV deal over the 5 year JD deal.

Plus, we get Kate Upton!

Rodon likely 6/180 now. And you'll feel good about it !

It's been a blast watching Verlander pitch for the Astros, and I hope he wins a lot of games with the Mets. Glad he went to an NL team.

So glad things are finally beginning to break Justin’s way. He’s suffered so.

Kate Upton says the Yankees offered more, but he preferred the Mets. Where’s Karl from NY?

I somehow missed this news yesterday. I am very pleased with this. Not only would I rather have this contract over deGrom’s, I’m pretty sure I’d want Verlander in general over Jake. Maybe I’m just coping, but I don’t have a ton of confidence for deGrom to be anything close to his best pitcher in baseball level anymore. Verlander just showed he can still be elite.

Yes.

Nah. The electricity and home-grown level is just too high to pass up for me, subjectively. I honestly think it's a coinflip between these two regarding health/performance.

At one point in time that was second all time.

I wonder where Gibson ranks on the K%/lgK% rankings. Gibson's at 1.33. Johnson's at 1.61 which I assume is #1 (unless it's somebody like Young). Nope here's Randy Johnson way out at 1.75. Even Scherzer is at 1.44.

Dazzy Vance is at 1.875...

Is that true, was there an actual source? Yes, I would be surprised, there's pretty much never been a free agent that picked the Mets over the Yankees when both offered.
   24. DCA Posted: December 06, 2022 at 03:37 PM (#6108297)
My first thought was Waddell, 2.17 K%/lgK%
   25. Adam Starblind Posted: December 06, 2022 at 03:42 PM (#6108298)
Times change. They must not have been persuaded of your view that the South Bronx section of NY is a cross between Paris and the Garden of Eden.

   26. DCA Posted: December 06, 2022 at 03:45 PM (#6108300)
Koufax 1.8, Nolan Ryan 1.78, Smoky Joe Wood 1.77 (highest I have found after Waddell and Vance)
   27. Ziggy: social distancing since 1980 Posted: December 06, 2022 at 04:31 PM (#6108316)
What about someone with a short career. All peak and no decline. Herb Score maybe? (Don't know how to check lgK% without going through each season manually, so I'll let those with more B-R dexterity handle it.)
   28. DCA Posted: December 06, 2022 at 05:26 PM (#6108331)
Score is a bit shy of those mentioned. I checked. JR Richard is a similar case.

B-R -> go to advanced stats, then ratio pitching. Career K% and lgK% are both shown.
