Keith Olbermann puts Yankee coach on blast with Twitter photo; MLB to call Yankees

Ford Corners! Go to Whitey Ford Corners!

The Yankees have a man in the seats who indicates to their on… on Twitpic

Major League Baseball officials will call the Yankees Saturday to remind them of baseball operations bulletin C-4, which forbids team staff from communicating pitch types and pitch speed to players via hand signals, an MLB spokesman said.

Friday, Keith Olbermann put on Twitter a photo of Brett Weber, a Yankees’ baseball operations coaching assistant, wearing a headset and sitting in the stands behind home plate, holding up four fingers toward the field during Thursday’s opener, presumably signaling pitch speed.

“Communicating pitch types, pitch speed, through hand signals, is prohibited,” the spokesman said after looking at the photo. “We’re going to call them to remind them what the rule says. It could all be perfectly innocent - some clubs don’t trust what’s on the scoreboard.”

Yankee GM Brian Cashman did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Most MLB teams have an employee who sits in the stands behind home plate and charts pitch speed and type, which is Weber’s job. He also often signals the velocity of the Yankees’ own pitchers to their dugout.

Some Yankee hitters waiting on-deck look for pitch speed from that employee instead of on the scoreboard - where it is shown in most every ballpark, including the Stadium - believing the staffer is more accurate. That would seem to be against the rules laid out in the bulletin.

I guess it's good to know a coach's opinion of the opposing pitcher's speed if you don't trust the scoreboard, but wouldn't it be a little more valuable to know it BEFORE THE PITCH WAS THROWN? It's not as if Webber were sitting in the clubhouse with a TV on his lap and relaying the catcher's signals to the batter.

How the hell do you know what he was being told through the headset. He could have been giving the hitter the pitch type from the catcher's signals for all we know...

Eh, yeah nevermind. Reading comprehension issues. For some reason I thought he was in the bullpen... Although I still think the Yankess should have to forfeit the game on principal.

What a wonderful intersection for people who hate both the Yankees and Olberman.

The Yankees are relieved that it was a false alarm and that their dabbling with X-ray vision is still secret.

Two, actually. Alex's post had lyrics from a Candace and Vanessa duet.

Of course if Webber---or even better, an anonymous Yankee contract worker in the box seats who could keep his mouth shut---was watching the game on his i-phone, then it's a whole new ballgame in more ways than one. But so many catchers give their final pitch call at the last second, it's hard to imagine that even that sort of scheme would do the batter much good.

On top of that, those types of streams usually have at least a few seconds delay.

I have no guess as to what the guy's doing, but he really seems too far out in the open to be attempting anything against the rules.

Paul Molitor was aces at stealing catcher signs and picking up other cues on pitches. Cooper loved it while Simmons overthought things and asked not to be told. Ben Ogilvie would refer to Paul as a wizard.

Excellent point. You'd need to have all the games on WPIX and have to give the operative a 20-year old battery-powered mini-TV, and even that might have enough of a delay to ruin the idea.

I was looking for, "Yes, Yes I am."

I don't know why anyone would want to avoid it. It might be the only show our entire family of five all enjoys.

Still, Cashman added another zinger about the stir Olbermann's picture caused "in the blogosphere" the past few days.

"It's just silly," he said. "The psychotics who obsessed about it yesterday, I think we did them a favor by keeping them off the streets and preventing them from hurting others."

SLINK

Best music of any kids show... provided, of course, Pavement never recorded for a cartoon soundtrack.

That duet with Chaka Khan and Clay Aiken was MONEY!

There was a profile on Jeter on the WWL a few years ago where it talked about him getting pitch speed from a scout behind home plate while in the on deck circle. I guess it's okay if Jeter is doing it.

The scoreboard gun readings are useless. Inaccurate and inflated.
