Kiszla: Time for Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd to take responsibility

When will somebody finally demand accountability from general manager Dan O’Dowd for a team that has lost its mojo in LoDo?

We know O’Dowd won’t be grilled by franchise owners Dick and Charlie Monfort, who apparently think general manager is a lifetime appointment, the same as Supreme Court justice or queen of England.

But, sooner or later, O’Dowd must answer to the 2.9 million Coors Field fans who mistakenly bought the idea that this would be a baseball season with no limits.

What went wrong?

“I wish I knew,” Colorado first baseman Todd Helton said Tuesday. “If you figure it out, let me know.”

...Why does it seem nothing bad ever sticks to O’Dowd when the Rockies fail to meet expectations?

Check the history, which you might think was ghostwritten by O’Dowd. Mike Hampton wasted the Monforts’ money. Clint Hurdle was too high-strung. Matt Holliday cared more about money than loyalty. Rather than stepping up to be an ace, Ubaldo Jimenez came down with a bad case of altitude sickness.

Thanks to Hack.

Wait, what? I thought I heard that Colorado had the NL West title clinched? I guess that's just not enough for the fans in Denver these days.

DaDo lost his mojo in LoDo? Kudos for CarGo and Tulo, but Ubaldo was a no-go.

wtf is LoDo?

Did I miss something where the Rox were declared a juggernaut? Cuz it's hard to see why the would have been.

But they seem a team that has really been done in my their bench (despite Giambi having a pretty good season) and probably moronic early season decisions around 2B/3B/CF. Solid seasons at C, 1B, SS, LF, CF, RF plus one good bench hitter and a 103 ERA+ out of a pitching staff usually adds up to at least 500 but giant amounts of suck everywhere else bring the team OPS+ down to 89.

I blame the on-field personnel more than the front office. O'Dowd left a big gaping hole at second base (which he since fixed with a nice trade for Mark Ellis), but other than that, the problem has been guys underperforming. Ian Stewart was a league-average third baseman at 24 and 25, then cratered at 26. Dexter Fowler was a less extreme but similar story. Ubaldo was supposed to be an ace, but was merely good; Esmil Rogers was supposed to be a good, but was crap. Felipe Paulino looked like dog #### for the Rockies, but has been very solid as a starter for the Royals; the Rox' season would look pretty different if Tracy and Apodaca had been able to get that kind of performance out of him.

Tracy also did self-destructive things like let Ty Wigginton play third base and put Eric Young Jr. in a corner outfield slot. I'd blame Jim Tracy and Carney Lansford at least as much for this season as I would O'Dowd.

This.

It long ago became obvious that Cameron knows about as much about baseball as my cats.

Sure, but who was it who hired Tracy, and signed off on the hiring of Lansford?

Everyone who predicted the Diamondbacks' winning the NL West raise your hand.

Ask David Icke - he knows the truth!

David Icke ... Queen of England ... Diamondbacks ... snakes ... reptiles.

It's all becoming very, very clear.

Here are the THT staff 2011 predictions.

Only one of us picked AZ as high as third, and they were the clear consensus last-place team. Meanwhile the consensus was that the Rockies would at least contend with the Giants for first, and perhaps win it.

Tracy did a terrific job in 2009, and did all right last year. I don't think anyone expected him to respond to 2011's unique challenges so poorly, and I can't blame O'Dowd for not foreseeing that.

You're right that O'Dowd bears most of the responsibility for hiring Lansford, which seemed like a bad idea from the get-go.

But if you're going to go down that path, you might as well blame the Monforts for hiring Dan O'Dowd.

I was kind of hoping your link was going to describe cracking a cat open and finding a scroll in their belly with a prediction or piece of advice written on it...

Lower Downtown, the area where Coors Field is located.

Fowler's season OPS is now up to .802. He had a bad first half, but has been great lately. So don't blame him.
