LA Dodgers Almost Dropped Dodger Blue for Dodger Purple in 1990s

“I was told this by several people because I wasn’t there at the time, not in my role as I am now”, Yoshida warned before continuing, “but apparently when Fox bought the team in 1997, they were interested in changing the Dodgers colour to purple.”

I know what you’re thinking, but remember this was the 1990s, nothing seemed off the table, things now considered untouchable were being changed without much consideration for what exactly was happening.

“Purple was a very hot colour back then and I’ve heard from several sources it went pretty far up the chain”.

The Los Angeles Lakers, of course, had long worn purple by that point, the Los Angeles Kings were in the process of re-adding purple to their look after dropping it a decade earlier, and the brand new Los Angeles Sparks were also very purple. Los Angeles could’ve been a (mostly) purple sports city had the plan happened.

Of course, in all reality, if this move did end up taking place, the Dodgers would’ve long since switched back from purple to blue as the push for tradition across sports design quickly faught back against the wildness of the ’90s, undoing many of those bold changes.

I would have thought the McCourts would have been the drivers behind this.

Man, the 90s were all about purple and teal for uniforms.

You're both right! Every uniform in the 1990s had at least two of those colours, and often all four. Yeeecccchhhhh....!!!

It is important to note that everyone in the 90s was on a lot of drugs.

We say that about every decade!

The worst was when the Cardinals had the one teal bird and one silver bird on the purple bat.

They actually did do something funny to that logo in the 90s...

Not the 2010's or even the 2000's or decades before the 1960's.

News Corp was not a good owner. It is easy to forget how rotten they were because they sold the team to someone dramatically worse.

Re 10. Opiods, buddy, opiods.

Meth, cocaine, and weed as well.

2010s was weed everywhere, meth, adderal, micro-dosing, opioids, opioids, opioids. Usage is going nowhere but up.

Weed is definitely going up (getting higher?)

There are only 6 States now which have not either fully legalized, allowed medicinal use, or decriminalized possession of small amounts:

Idaho
Wyoming
Kansas
Tennessee
Alabama
South Carolina

The states where it is fully legal:

California
New York
Michigan
Illinois
Massachusetts
New Jersey
Washington
Oregon
Colorado
Maine
Vermont
Nevada
Arizona
South Dakota
DC
Montana
Virginia

That is around 41% of the population.

If you add in the states which allow Medicinal Use while also decriminalizing possession --

North Dakota
Minnesota
Missouri
Ohio
New Mexico
New Hampshire
Delaware
Maryland
Connecticut
Rhode Island

it is over 53%.

Some of the states on this list are pretty darn Red.

So what is it going to take, to get Congress to change federal law?

If I'm an adviser to Biden, I tell him this is low-hanging fruit for late in his term.

minor funny story, I do not smoke or have ever smoked (I think I've taken 4 hits of pot in my lifetime) but when I turned 35, my brother who is a pothead, gave me $1 for my future presidential campaign, saying he knows I would legalize it. (which is true, the illegalizing of pot is one of the dumbest federal laws ever) (obviously this was an inside joke for my family -5 siblings- as I'm the only one who didn't partake, but at the same time, I have no problem with people partaking)

I know and understand the history of pot laws, but it's still stupid as hell.
