LEADING OFF: Surprising O’s, Tigers, Mets play home openers

Coming off winning road trips, the surprising Orioles, Tigers and Mets play their home openers. Sellouts are expected at Camden Yards, Comerica Park and Citi Field to greet teams trying to bounce back from losing seasons.

Alex Cobb will be activated off the 10-day injured list to start for the 4-2 Orioles against the Yankees. Spencer Turnbull pitches for the 4-3 Tigers vs. Kansas City and, in a matchup of aces, Noah Syndergaard starts for the 5-1 Mets against Stephen Strasburg and Washington.

The Angels also play their home opener. Mike Trout’s team is 1-5 going into its game against Texas.

Well, where better to discuss goings-on in baseball that haven’t already received a thread?

Orioles I'll give you, but how are the Mets surprising?

The Mets so far are playing like we'd hoped. The top pitchers are terrific, and the lineup is hugely improved, with Cano, Alonso, and Ramos right in the heart of it.

#2 and actually Cano is only OPSing .552 right now (and Nimmo .380). They'll come around, though.

McNeill is (not surprisingly) making a good case to be an everyday player.

Also deGrom has a FIP of -0.30. I know it's only 2 starts but I didn't realize that FIP could be negative.

Winning a series against the Nationals on the road while facing Scherzer and Strasburg is good. Sweeping the Marlins may not be that impressive because the Marlins aren't any good but wins are wins.

Also, the Mets certainly don't need to look back too far to fin evidence of how a good start doesn't mean all that much.

That is the surprise.

The Mets are already tiring out their bullpen, though. I don't see what the point of Luis Avilan is; if you're going to have a reliever who doesn't pitch in close games, he should be a long man like Hector Santiago or Corey Oswalt.

The Mets playing JD Davis every day has been pretty neat. Him not hitting—less so.

That is the surprise.

PF deserves that, walked right into it.

I come not to bury the Tigers but to ... well not praise them but marvel at them.

They have played 7 games and scored ... 12 runs. Awesomely enough they've only given up 17 and are 4-3 (they're the anti-Cubs!) But 12 runs in 7 games is an impressive feat. A young man named Christian Stewart has started 1 for 22 but at least the one is a HR and he's got a few walks. Good ol' Mikie Mahtook has accepted that challenge with an 0 for 16 with 1 BB and 9 Ks. The team has 2 HRs and an ISO of 087. But at least they're playing an exciting brand of baseball going 2 for 3 in steals.

Eight games and 17 runs scored! I knew they'd have a terrible offense, but every single starter has allowed 3 runs or fewer. Let's see how long it lasts.

I see what you did there. :-)

I saw that Greene got his 5th save for Detroit today on the MLB network ticker and it was a holy sh** moment for me when I realized that a team that 1) had Jordan Zimmermann start on opening day and is 2) batting Niko Goodrum cleanup 3) behind the ghost of Miguel Cabrera has won 5 games already...

...and the mighty mighty Cubs are 1-4!

Rub some Lugo on it and it'll be fine!

(Familia scares me for some reason. He looked earpy on opening day and I just don't have much trust in the guy to get you to the 9th)

#15: I agree with basically all of that, but also don't think you can read too much into a week of games. Callaway's in-game tactics are basically terrible, same as last year.

When it comes to the roster crunch: Smith has looked good, but unless they're going to platoon Alonso, he doesn't really have a place on the team, as a guy who is limited to a single position. It's too bad that he seems to be getting things right at just the wrong time, and it's still 100% possible that Alonso craters and needs more time in AAA, so he's not entirely redundant yet...but when/if everyone gets healthy, I can't see them keeping him over Davis (though that will leave the bench extremely tilted to the right side).

I believe the Tigers are currently in the wildcard, so I think now is as good a time as any to end the season and go on to the playoffs.

I think it's pretty obvious to send Davis down when Frazier gets back (and I think Davis should have an option left even though the article says he's out.) If Lowrie (or McNeill) can't play SS, you probably have to send Dom down when he comes back.
