I'd assume he's not pitching to Soto.

The Dodgers had at least Freese and Gavin Lux on their bench and could have used either in a double-switch.

I feel like the odds that Rendon is a metalhead are pretty close to 100%.

I'm torn. I don't like the Dodgers, and I love Howie Kendrick, but it kills me to see a UC Riverside Highlander #### the bed. At the end of the day, you can't expect a team who got swept in the season series by the Angels to advance very far in the playoffs.

Haha, I've got the ESPN Radio feed going which is a good minute behind, hence my comment about the Nationals maybe cashing in, in the midst of posts about the Nationals plating four runs.

So Roberts has to be fired, right?

And Joe Maddon is available.

And as usual, it looks likely that the best record in each league will be gone after the first round.
1035. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:29 AM (#5888663)
Why give Kelly a second inning? Kelly is trash. That was inexplicable.

Oh, and since we've had some dynasties talks around here the last few weeks, allow me to reiterate that I'll gladly take what the Cubs have done versus the path the Dodgers and their seven straight playoff appearances have done.

   1040. JJ1986 Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:32 AM (#5888668)
On purpose, Roberts gave Maeda one inning and Kelly 2. If you don't trust Jansen, I'd have gone with Gingergaard.

Howie Kendrick's grand slam is just the 2nd extra innings grand slam in postseason history

Nelson Cruz had the only other one, a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning of Game 2 of the 2011 ALCS, for the Rangers, against the Tigers.

Both came with the score tied 3-3.

Likely or not, your post is also wrong. The Brewers had the most wins in the nl, and lost in the nlcs.

Edit and red Sox won WS.

1069. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:54 AM (#5888698)
Gotta feel good for him, especially after the defensive series he had.
   1070. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:56 AM (#5888699)
The first round claim is undoubtedly an oversell. But I've run the numbers before and posted it, although the site's search function can't find anything, and what I'm pretty sure of is that as of a few years ago, it was rare for the best record in each league to be in the World Series and also rare for the best record in the major leagues to win the World Series.
   1071. QLE Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:57 AM (#5888703)

Wonder how the folk hoping for a Yankees-Dodgers World Series are taking it....
   1072. Bote Man Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:58 AM (#5888704)
Man, Howie went from regular season "pretty spry for an old guy" to post-season goat to POST-SEASON G.O.A.T. for Nats fans there. What a ride.

I honestly had a good feeling this time, I can't explain it, and I'm glad I was rewarded. I just knew it was over when he left Kelly out there for another guy, and another guy, and another guy and watching Dodgers fans melt down on Twitter. You just knew it was coming.

Now the Nats can work on blowing it in the NLCS this time around! LOLz

And let the bullsh*t narrativing begin with the postgame show. Jimmy Rollins: "In their heart of hearts, they know how to play those championship innings..."
   1074. Red Voodooin Posted: October 10, 2019 at 12:59 AM (#5888707)
Interestingly, and understandably when I think about it, the Rendon double was a bigger cWPA factor than the Kendrick GS. And neither of them were bigger than Soto's hit the WC game. That does surprise me.

They just had to learn how to win (and let Bryce Harper go).
1076. Athletic Supporter is USDA certified lean Posted: October 10, 2019 at 01:33 AM (#5888710)
[1073] After Kendrick's GS the announcers couldn't stop talking about "Kendrick is such a veteran, you just knew he was going to redeem himself and come through." I mean, in most of the timelines, this game ends in nine innings and Kendrick never even gets to bat in extras... (and it's not like he did anything to get them to extras)

Great performance that he absolutely gets credit for but the inevitability narrative is, as always, absurd.

[1074] One of the things that WPA really highlights is how much more valuable two-out homers are compared to no-out homers. And yeah, in that case, bases loaded, nobody out, you almost always win the game (likely even undersold since WPA thinks you're just gonna throw an average pitcher out there in the bottom half), Kendrick's tater obviously making it much more dramatic.
   1077. Bote Man Posted: October 10, 2019 at 01:41 AM (#5888711)

So here's a hell of a stat:

The 2019 Washington Nationals are the first team in baseball history to win two playoff rounds after being within six outs of elimination in both of them.

Yeah, bases loaded nobody out, they were likely to score a run or two anyway.

Also, despite his failure to be clutch tonight, David Freese remains the all time leader in offensive cWPA.

It's funny that the cWPA leaderboard is so tightly bunched (especially for a volatile metric). Also, nobody has even reached the level of a single ultimate home run in game 7 of the WS!

Has anyone ever been to a "viewing party" at the away team's home field? Seems like it would be fun in a way, but is it worth it to pay the ridiculous concession prices, etc.?

I watched game 6 of the 1992 World Series in the SkyDome in Toronto. Was a blast chanting "MVP" for Pat Borders. We ran onto the field after the Jays won too...by dad still has some dirt from home plate in a jar.

I was raised to never, ever pay for food or drink at the movies or a ball game, so we avoided that problem.

ah, to be in a sports betting state desperate to bring in customers!

the basic line for TBR-HOU is +230 for Rays, meaning if you bet $100 (ok, $10) on the Rays and they win, you get $230 (ok, $23). the "boost" is "triple odds - so if you take the Rays for $10 and they win, you get $69 (max bet for this is $25 to win about $170).

so almost 7 to 1 odds to take the Rays. Cole is awesome, but is this tempting?

Sure. The Rays bullpen only gave up 1 run in all of Game 4, same as the Astros did when Cole started in Game 2, and this time they have a better Opener in Tyler Glasnow. Anything could happen. Bet the farm, Howie, it’s your one chance at a glorious retirement!
