Loek van Mil, tallest pro baseball player ever, dies at 34

Some sad news: Loek Van Mil, the Dutch pitcher who spent ten seasons in the minors and who starred for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, has died at age 34. The Netherlands baseball and softball association, KNBSB, said that his death was due to injuries sustained in an accident. Standing at seven feet one inch tall, van Mil was most notable for being the tallest man ever known to have played professional baseball.

Damn. I saw him pitch once while he was with the Akron Aeros, and he looked incredibly tall even from my vantage point on the mound. It's a shame he never made it to the Majors.

It is. I can't say that LvM deserved a look (got crushed in his AAA chances) but he was pretty good in AA and seemed like a likable guy.

(Note: no one remembers him, but Ryan Doherty was also 7-1 - after leaving baseball, he became a pro beach volleyball player.)

One of my favorite players to follow in his peregrinations across the globe.

The reporting on his death is very confusing. Most of the articles link his death to a harrowing incident back in December, when he fell while hiking and fractured his skull. From what I can tell though, he died in a "train accident" in the Netherlands, most likely in a way that was influenced by his brain injury. Terrible.

Very sad to hear this. I spent a lot of time at Twins spring training in Fort Myers in 2010, and met Loek numerous times. He was a super nice guy.
