Long-time Cubs’ radio voice Pat Hughes receives Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award

Following his 40th season as a MLB announcer, long-time Chicago Cubs‘ radio voice Pat Hughes has received one of the highest levels of recognition in the profession. That would be the Baseball Hall of Fame‘s Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting. The Hall announced that decision Wednesday:

This pick came after the Hall of Fame announced the 10 finalists in October. The other finalists were Dave Campbell, Joe Castiglione, Gary Cohen, Jacques Doucet, Tom Hamilton, Jerry Howarth, Ernie Johnson, Duane Kuiper, and Steve Stone.

Jacques Doucet has zero national recognition, but he was the lone voice of baseball in French, and contributed so much to the language, etc.

He's also in poor health. The hope of him getting recognized before he passes aways seems slim now.

Way to go, Pat. Well-deserved!

Thumbs up for Pat. I can't really compare him to anybody else's radio guy but he's very good. His radio voice is kind of a classic old baseball guy voice. Given the Cubs radio gig is fairly prestigious and so usually doesn't go to a first-time PBP guy, when I first heard him, I assumed he was already in his 50s and was quite surprised when I first saw a picture of him back in the day.

Agreed that Pat is great. A really underrated thing about him is how good he is wrangling his partners, and he's had some doozies - Santo, for all his appeal, obviously was not a conventional broadcaster, but Hughes made it work by simultaneously indulging him and keeping him grounded. And then he was saddled with Moreland and then Coomer, both basically useless, but Hughes managed to cover for them for the most part and keep things listenable.

Just a real pro in addition to being a good listen.

I second all the above. He’s been excellent for a long time and has completely earned this honor. I just hope the Cubs won’t make him plug the Village of Bedford Park or Sloan Water Solutions during his acceptance speech. Or MyPillow, which he had to do for a couple years.

as a young kid I was bummed out when I had to listen to this guy for a couple innings during Uecker's off innings, then I started to like 'em. He makes listening to the game very easy. Great call on his management of his partners over the years. I'm no Cubs fan at all, but he's performed quite admirably.

Echoing above -

Pat's just got a perfect voice for radio sports and he's outstanding at describing the action. Pairs well with any color guy. Above all though, he's got no schtick. Just pure, perfect competence.

This is absolutely true: I had a friend from Philadelphia who, when he moved to Chicago, couldn’t stand Pat because “He just sounds like he’s talking because he’s in love with his voice. Not like Harry Kallas.”

We are all in the prison of our own perspectives. Congratulations to Pat, who makes a Cubs game more enjoyable.
