Longtime St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon will retire after 2021 season

Mike Shannon’s 50th season calling radio broadcasts for the St. Louis Cardinals will apparently be his last.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Dan Caesar reports that Shannon, 81, will close out his broadcasting career with the 2021 season. Beginning in 1972, the longtime announcer began calling games on KMOX with legendary play-by-play man Jack Buck following a nine-year playing career with the Cardinals….

Altogether, Shannon will have spent 63 years with the St. Louis organization. Prior to joining the Cardinals’ radio broadcast team, he worked in the team’s front office for one year as assistant director of promotions and sales.

He's certainly an acquired taste for those unfamiliar with him, but for others who have been along for the ride he's a colorful, drunk uncle whose enthusiastic malapropisms are as familiar and comfortable as the old corduroy couch in the basement rec room.

One of my earliest baseball-on-TV memories is seeing Shannon hit a home run in the ninth inning of Game Seven of the 1968 World Series, too little and late to make a difference but still a nice moment.

Shannon became gravely ill after the next season and soon retired from playing, and I always vaguely imagined that he must be at death's door or beyond it, but he's had a great run for somebody who was fixing to die at the age of 30.

the first time i ever heard him call a game i thought 'this guy is blasted' ... and he probably was.

but didn't he become sober?

not that it changed his delivery.

His disease forced him to stop drinking. I doubt he’s had one drink the whole time he broadcasted. But he could certainly mangle his words

Abner Doubleday has done it again!

I know someone who knew him personally and he was sober for a long time, fell off the wagon when his wife died, but got back on fairly quickly.

I think that he has some interesting calls, and he's much better earlier in the game than in the later innings, but he has a ton of interesting stories.

Shannon is unusual in that he made a successful switch upwards on the defensive spectrum, from right field to third base, several years into his MLB career.
