The Yankees have activated Aaron Judge. He’s in RF, batting 2nd, tonight.

Rare leadoff 2-run HR by Luis Garcia puts the Nationals up 4-2 over the Rays in the 10th inning. Nats Daniel Hudson had coughed up a 2-1 lead on Brandon Lowe’s down-to-their-last-strike-in-bottom-of-9th HR.

Phils call up #1 overall pick from 2016, Mickey Moniak, because they are running out of healthy players. Moniak has been a bust so far. In the minors. 3016 does like like a terrible draft year.

Count me amongst those who are extremely impressed with your long term projection system.

the Mets are 13-3 in deGrom's previous 16 starts against the Phillies.

he even got credit for the win in 8 of them !

Well, he's out after 2 tonight.

I was very near sighted as a young man but as I get old, I am getting more and more far sighted.

second game of the cards/brewers doubleheader, first brewer batter of the night hit on the first pitch.

it's pretty obviously some kind of payback from the folderol from last night, but why it's in the second game i have no idea. maybe because it's shildt's suspension game?

baseball ... gotta love it.
   9. phredbird Posted: September 16, 2020 at 08:12 PM (#5977086)

and now we see why hitting batters is almost always a dumb idea.

oviedo walks the second batter.

great.

... and braun launches a rocket over the left field fence.

jesus mary and joseph.

All Yankee runs against Blue Jays on HRs - LeMahieu leading off the game, a 2-run shot by Higashioka, and a Clint Frazier solo shot. 4-0 in 4th.

EDIT: LeMahieu’s 2nd HR of the game makes it 6-0.
   12. phredbird Posted: September 16, 2020 at 08:41 PM (#5977094)

the soap opera in milwaukee continues.

garcia, the guy who was hit on the first pitch in this game, is on second and the catcher wieters and the pitcher oviedo are looking at him because they think he's trying to read signs and telegraph the pitch to yelich. now dejong is talking to him too.

this game could get interesting.

All [...] runs against [...] on HRs

{yawn}
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 16, 2020 at 08:46 PM (#5977096)
Gerrit Cole heading out for the 6th, leading 7-0, with but a single BB on his ledger.

EDIT: The vague indirect reference jinx struck on the 1st batter. My bad.
   15. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 16, 2020 at 09:11 PM (#5977100)
MLB HR Leader Luke Voit hits his 19th of the season, making it 11-1. Earlier, Kyle Higashioka contributed his 2nd HR of the game.

Looks like Howie jinxed him. De Grom leaves after 3 runs in 2 innings with right hamstring spasm.
   17. phredbird Posted: September 16, 2020 at 09:32 PM (#5977103)

cardinals pitchers have hit 3 brewers tonight, including braun.

i'm sure at least one of those was inadvertent, but i'm also sure milwaukee isn't going to let another go without repercussions.

we're playing like poop in this game btw. probably plain ol' fatigue.
   18. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 16, 2020 at 09:38 PM (#5977104)
Three HR game for Kyle Higashioka! 13-1.

Well, the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano in 3008 really set back organized ball for quite some time, with the result being a long period of slim pickings in the draft.
   20. Walt Davis Posted: September 16, 2020 at 09:57 PM (#5977107)
All you BIP fans (and me) missed a great one. Cubs-Cleveland through 5 full, just 2 Ks, 4 BBs and 2-2. I assume that still took at least 1.5 hours for some reason. Looks like standard reliever-fest is starting so you've probably missed all the fun.
   21. Moses Taylor, glorified meat shield Posted: September 16, 2020 at 10:14 PM (#5977108)
A ton of hard hit balls in this game, Walt. So lots of bad luck for the hitters.

Looks like Howie jinxed him.

ho hum. Mets win another deGrom start vs Phillies

ok NOT ho hum.

Mets trailed 4-0 against a dominant ex-Met Wheeler.

got within 4-3 in the 8th - and their entire season is on the brink.

Conforto on first with 2 outs, and JD Davis hits one near the fence. Conforto thinks there are 2 outs, so he hedges between first and second. with no one in the stands, I assume the 1B coach was mulling where to have dinner delivery, or something, rather than curse loudly at Conforto.

Conforto rallies to score by a whisker and it's tied.

Mets snag another run in the 9th, partly on a balk when Neris drops the ball on the mound for a balk.

EDiaz strikes out 3 in a smooth 9th.

At work today, talking with a girl who likes baseball and the Cardinals and I said the following. " Cardinals lost last night, they can't win two games in a row, so they will win the first game and then lose the second game." it's just the way this team is, incapable of winning back to back games... at the same time, they'll still end up being the second seed in the Nl Central because everyone else has given up already.

The Reds are currently in 2nd by percentage points and on a bit of a run.

That’s 6 games the #Phillies have lost after leading by 3+ runs.

#Braves: One loss like that.

#Marlins: None.

.............

[wish they had the Mets number. they had a 7-2 lead in one game with one strike to go, runner on first - and lost! to the Yankees!]
   26. Walt Davis Posted: September 16, 2020 at 11:55 PM (#5977126)
The Cubs somehow back to 600 WP. Still, I refuse to be suckered into thinking they are a better team than I think they are. (Go ahead, try it.)
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 16, 2020 at 11:57 PM (#5977128)
That last inning was brutal to listen to. Bases loaded, no outs, and then two of their big hitters go down swinging and Javy goes down 0-2 before lining the game-winning hit. Phew.

I won't lie: I kind of like the runner-starts-on-second extra inning rule.
