Los Angeles Angels employee details team’s knowledge of Tyler Skaggs’ drug use to federal DEA investigators—ESPN

Kay has sought treatment for substance abuse twice this year, according to his mother and his wife, Camela. While recovering in the hospital from an overdose on April 22, Kay received a text from Skaggs seeking drugs, they said. Sandy was visiting her son in the hospital at the time, alongside his wife and Tim Mead, the former Angels vice president of communications and Kay’s supervisor. Sandy told Outside the Lines she saw the texts and told Mead that the team needed to get Skaggs “off his back.”

Mead, who left the Angels in June to become president of the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, told Outside the Lines no one mentioned Skaggs’ name in that conversation, or that Skaggs was an opioid user at any other time.

Addiction is Like the darknet - it’s right there in front of our eyes but we can’t see it. Best thing they can do here is come down hard on the enablers. Steroid issue seemed to be confined to a handful of enablers

This is going to get worse for the Angels before it gets better.

Terrible news. This front office needs a purge, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Maddon balks at walking into this #### show.

Eric Kay, the Angels' director of communications, also gave U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents the names of five other players who he believed were using opiates while they were Angels, the sources said.

In some ways, I would think it is unsurprising MLB has a series of players actively using opioids, with some developing into addicts. Players undoubtedly think nothing can topple them, and teams are perhaps all too willing to prescribe in the name of profit. So while this time it was Skaggs, next time it could be anyone. Or I guess what I mean is that the problem might extend beyond the Angels.

Likely true of every sport, right? no different from steroids - in addition to the glory, there's also the "play through pain/show up for your teammates" thing. If you're hurting, you can pop a pill and play . . . or you can Just Say No, and let your team down. That's pressure I'm glad I don't have to deal with.
