Los Angeles Angels hire Perry Minasian as new general manager, per report

The Los Angeles Angels have filled their vacant general manager position by hiring Perry Minasian, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Minasian, 40, was the Braves’ assistant general manager during the 2020 season. He had been a part of Atlanta’s front office since 2017, and prior to that, spent nine years working in the Toronto Blue Jays scouting department.

The Angels fired Billy Eppler following the 2020 season after the club completed its fifth consecutive losing campaign. Eppler took over as Angels’ general manager after the 2015 season. There were zero playoff appearances in his tenure and there wasn’t even a winning season. The best record under Eppler was 80-82, which happened in both 2017 and 2018.

Ken Rosenthal:

But besides interviewing several former GMs, including Ruben Amaro Jr., Michael Hill and Dan Jennings, the Angels reached out to some of the game’s top current executives, only to be rebuffed. Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti, Rays GM Erik Neander and Athletics GM David Forst were among the execs in whom the Angels showed interest, according to major-league sources.

I'm curious how much they are remaking their front office. As far as I know, Carlos Gomez (ChadBradfordWannabee) was still with them last year.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Why anyone would want to leave their current gig to work for an over-bearing, meddlesome, penny-pincher (at least when it comes to baseball operations staff) is beyond me. The only chance the Angels had was with someone who hadn't yet gotten their shot and figured ANY GM role was better than not being a GM. I anticipate this will go about as well for Mr. Minasian as it did for Eppler - he'll say all the right things, make some solid moves, but will lack the authority and infrastructure to build anything better than a mediocre team around Trout.

Someone with options is less likely to leave a job to work for a bad owner. It's not impossible to lure someone -- the White Sox just gave Giants assistant pitching coach Ethan Katz a promotion -- but it's harder. Why come to Anaheim to be blamed for Moreno's mistakes?

Michael Hill interviewed with the Mets. Seeing who they get will be interesting now that the Wilpons are gone.
