Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani scratched from Thursday start because of traffic jam

A traffic jam kept Los Angeles Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani from making it to the ballpark in time for his regular pregame pitching routine, and he was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday night against the Oakland Athletics and shifted to designated hitter.

Because of an accident on the Bay Bridge that snarled traffic for one of the Angels’ several buses, making a 45-minute trip increasingly longer than planned, Ohtani returned to the hotel and wound up on Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and he fell further behind schedule.

“That kept pushing him back,” manager Joe Maddon said. “For us, Shohei’s most comfortable, he’s pretty much regimented to get everything going about 4 o’clock for his start. It exceeded that by maybe an hour, so we started calling the audible at that point to not pitch him tonight. And if we’re not going to pitch him, we’re going to DH him.”

Was at the game and disappointing not to see him pitch. But fun to see the As light up the Angels bullpen in the sixth and Bassitt get a complete game shutout—first one my daughter has ever seen which is wild given the many other things she’s seen at games that used to be more unusual than complete game shutouts. Have to assume hitters will figure out Bassitt’s slider sometime but it’s fun to watch him keep hitters off stride

Going back to All Star break of 2019 to get to his last 33 starts, or more or less a full season's worth of starting pitching (timeframe also includes 3 relief appearances of 5 total innings), here is Bassitt's line:

36g 33gs 15-5 w/l 199.1ip 195k/48bb 1.10 whip 2.93 era

Seems like he's been pretty good for a while

I'm for it! I'm not confident in him. But I love to watch him right now.

Escaping through the lily fields, Shohei came across an empty space
It trembled and exploded, left a bus stop in its place
The bus came by and He got on, that's when it all began
There was Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to never ever land

Traffic in LA? What's next, a cop eating a donut?

[7] Had you read the excerpt, it would have been clear that this was a road game.

Heavy traffic follows Angelinos everywhere. (That's why there's suddenly so much traffic in places like Oregon and Nevada.)

Unless you're unfamiliar with the geography of California.

Every big city on the West Coast is a traffic disaster anymore. Seattle might be worse even than LA or the bay area.

[11] Is “Bay Area” not commonly known to refer to the San Francisco bay? I guess it might not since there are plenty of other bays in the country. This is a serious question from someone who has only lived in California and Oregon.

I would guess Votto knows that, and simply didn't read the excerpt. But surprising (to some) knowledge gaps of others are quite common. For instance, I was stunned you, an academic, had never heard of Case Western Reserve University. (And for the record, I would assume more people would know be familiar with the Bay Area geography than CWRU. I just bring it up to illustrate the larger point).

I've never lived in California (I live in Washington state) but whenever I hear the expression "Bay Area" I always assume it refers to the San Francisco Bay area.

I have family in other parts of the country who routinely get annoyed that Bay and Bay Area are used in mass media solely to refer to SF Bay Area and love to remind people of other important bays in the country. It’s a weird thing to focus on but it does reflect their belief that everyone knows what bay and Bay Area refer to
