LSU’s Dylan Crews wins Golden Spikes Award as NCAA’s top player

LSU center fielder Dylan Crews, projected to be the No. 1 pick in the amateur draft next month, on Sunday was honored as the winner of the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Crews, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season, led the Tigers to the Men’s College World Series finals and is among the national leaders in most offensive categories. He’s first in runs scored (94), second in on-base percentage (.562), fifth in hits (104) and sixth in batting average (.418).

Crews is the 10th Golden Spikes winner from the Southeastern Conference and the second from LSU. The Tigers’ Ben McDonald won the award in 1989…

Of the 44 previous Golden Spikes winners, three have gone on to win the Cy Young Award, three have been a Most Valuable Player, and 20 have been selected to at least one All-Star team as a player or manager.

A look at the list of winners and it's clear these guys usually turn out to be good MLers. No HoFers yet -- Will Clark and Ventura have come closest, I expect Posey to be the first, Bryce Harper is the next guy with a good shot. I didn't realize Andrew Vaughn of the White Sox had won this. Many of the pitchers were sidelined by injuries but they had generally been quite good up to that point. AJ Reed in 2014 is the most recent total bust but then you have to go back to Kip Bouknight in 2000 to find the next.

The announcers were raving about his fielding in the last game of the playoffs, but he misjudged three fly balls. Granted he caught them all, but he didn't look good.

Is it too early to call Kyle Lewis a total bust? He won the RoY in the Covid shortened 202 season, but since then he has played 60 games at a 86 OPS+, good for 0.3 WAR. He looks like a AAAA player. Tears it up in the minors, can't do anything in the majors.

I feel bad for the guy, but I think McKay is also a total bust at this point.

McKay and Lewis are more "felled by injury" than "bust." I think the latter term is reserved for guys who are actually bad.

Like Bouknight appears to not missed any time for 7 seasons before getting released (impressive for a pitcher) but never made the majors. AJ Reed flopped in his first call up and then his minor league stats got worse every year and he only got one more real shot which he bombed even worse and that was that.
