Maddon’s plan for Angels blends analytics, fundamentals

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Joe Maddon was a part of the Los Angeles Angels organization during most of its glory days, including that lone World Series championship in 2002.

With many of his past players and future ones in the crowd Thursday, Maddon outlined his vision for trying to bring the Angels back into contention during his first news conference as manager.

Much of that comes from things he learned in the Angels farm system in the late 1970s and early-to-mid 1980s, first as a player and then as a coach. In short, he is looking for a fundamentally sound team with a simple, aggressive style.

Most of all, he is looking to get the Angels back to a perfect balance of using analytics and the human element of the game. Or as Madden puts it, data versus art.

Mind you, it’s not like he can state the real issues with the team…..

Meh, the news conference was boring as hell. His psuedo-professorial demeanor doesn't really do much for me. He's probably better than Ausmus.

Did Hombre get the first question in? "Mr. Maddon....HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY??"

Angels intend to win by playing good baseball and scoring more runs than their opponents more often than not.

Terry Holland, the U of Virginia's basketball coach in the 70s and 80s, said before one season something like, "This year for the first time we might have to try to outscore our opponents." You knew what he meant ("our defense sucks"), but it was better if you pretended that you didn't.

Yeah, taking the opportunity in the press conference to explain "even in the absolute best case scenario I'm only going to swing a couple games, mainly with my bullpen usage, winning is really just about finding/developing better players" is not a great way to justify being among the highest paid managers in the game.

"A series of disguises to get Mike Trout 12-15 at bats per game."

Moreno said that payroll would be higher than it was in 2019. Of course, he didn’t say if he is willing to go near the luxury tax limit or it remains to be seen if Eppler will choose wisely on how the money is spent.

I, and most Angels fans that I have seen, are interpreting that as "We are going to make Gerrit Cole an offer of all the money." Which I am happy about, even though it probably ends badly once he ages and all the Astros magic Satan dust rubs off. Or it ends badly when he signs with the Yankees anyway, then the Angels instead spend that money on Ryu and Odorizzi, who spend next year either hurt or mediocre before quickly falling off a cliff and taking over for Pujols' albatross contract.

Telling the truth is always welcome. And, in any case, a couple game swing is actually worth many times more than his salary (the conventional wisdom, while very debatable, is that one WAR is worth $8M).

Ohtani could be healthy on Maddon’s watch.

Former Mets Manager Mickey Callaway is reportedly joining Maddon as the Angels Pitching Coach.
