Major League Baseball’s crackdown on sticky substances begins with regular checks on pitchers Monday

“I think I’ve seen everything in baseball, but this is new, setting a new precedent,” said Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, in his 24th season as a big league manager after 19 seasons as a player.

Asked whether such substances were tacitly allowed in the past, Baker responded, “You just didn’t really make a fuss about it, but it was against the rules, so we’ll see.”

Rangers starter Kyle Gibson and Oakland’s Frankie Montas weren’t checked until after pitching in the second inning in Texas. Both were smiling after getting inspected on the field, and then getting a tap on the chest from plate umpire Dan Iassogna. They got checked again three innings later.

Texas manager Chris Woodward said before the game that Gibson said he has never used anything on a baseball.

“He’s kind of a unicorn nowadays ... to have a guy who is so good who doesn’t use anything,” Woodward said. “It’s probably rare.”

It is kind of entertaining especially tonight when Max Scherzer got checked for a 3rd time and tried to drop his pants, then yelled something at the Phillies manager who went coo-coo over it. Not swift as that just encourages Max and his teammates to have a pitch 'slip'.

We’ll, it’s going according to plan. Sticky stuff checks are now a weapon to disrupt pitchers. The right way To
Deal with this is eject Girardi

Seems like it should require a challenge to have a manager request a check.

I saw the video of Scherzer freaking out without realizing it was the third time he had been checked. That's just ridiculous, especially in a landscape when we're trying to improve the pace of the game. There's no way they should be allowing managers to check a pitcher more than once a game. That's not fair to the pitcher or to the fans.

They should be monitoring spin rates and checking when those rates seem suspiciously high. Scherzer may have had good reason to complain, but limiting checks to just one a game would make enforcement ridiculously easy to game.

#4 Disagree. The obvious solution is for the pitchers to be naked (with a pat down before the start of each inning) and the umpire to hand the pitcher every time (to prevent teammates from altering the ball).

No obvious downside to this that I can see.

How so? If you're a pitcher who wants to cheat, do you take the goop out with you in the first inning, knowing you could get tossed right away if the manager decides on an early check? Or do you wait till the manager has called for a check, knowing it might not come till the fifth or sixth inning - or never?

As long as managers don't call for a pitcher to be checked at the same point of every game, it seems like one check per pitcher per game would work fine.

And, of course, the umpire could still check the pitcher a second time if the ump had reason to believe the guy had started gooping up, so it's not like the pitcher has nothing to worry about.

It looked like the umps checked every pitcher at the end of every inning, at least in the Cubs game (maybe I missed them not checking the SP everytime). The P would stop before going into the dugout, at least 2 umps and the manager came over to join. I don't know if they checked at the beginning of a inning (that would make more sense IMO). So for Girardi to ask for a check mid-innings seems like the obvious loophole that MLB should close immediately - yes, it should cost a challenge at least, maybe more if the umps check the pitchers before they start pitching.

Apparently starting pitchers have been told to expect two inspections a game from the umps. In Scherzer's case, those were the 1st and 3rd inning inspections. The 3rd was because Girardi is a little #####.

What they said on the Red Sox game last night is every starter was checked at the end of the first inning then every reliever was checked at the end of his first inning of work.

Of course the Rays used an opener who only went 2/3 of an inning. I didn't see if he got checked.

The Rays always find an edge
