HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!
   2. Voodoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 03:09 PM (#6015080)
Cubs are on fire, fresh off the sweep of the Mets, burst out to a 7-0 lead vs. the Brewers after two innings.

And as I type this, Baez goes yard and it's 8-0.

This is such fool's gold for the Cubs. The offense will go back to garbage (though maybe not as bad as the first few weeks looked) and everyone will point to this week and say there's more there when there just isn't. I'm happily recant that if the Cubs can score more than 3 runs the next 2 games (and they're looking they're missing Burnes).
   4. Brian C Posted: April 23, 2021 at 03:29 PM (#6015084)
Fool's gold or no - and I don't disagree with you, Moses - I've decided that I'm approaching this team on more of a day-to-day basis. On days, they win - that's cool. On days they lose - oh well, that sucks.

It's plainly a flawed team as you say, and the future is ... not super appealing! So, whatever tomorrow holds, 10 runs today is fun.

I'm sure nostalgic for the "Moses Taylor, Optimist" days. ;)

Not that I disagree with you that the other shoe will drop with this offense, but it's really nice to feel some hope after looking so terrible in the early stretch and being left for dead, with the obituaries already penned, by folks around here and beyond.

Nobody really "pens" anything anymore.

Touché. The sword is now mightier.

Oh, I wrote down "they're done" on a post it 2 weeks ago. I don't remember where I put it, but I'm sure I'll find it after the next time they're shut out.

Paul Casella @Paul_CasellaMLB 51m

@Cubs offense this season...

First 115 innings: 34 runs
Last 45 innings: 50 runs

This is a little old, but still.

Hey, Marquee, how are those YouTube TV negotiations going?

I switched from YouTubeTV to Fubo, partially for Marquee. The interface is pretty similar, but actually a little better. Small channel differences here and there (so far, biggest omission for me is TNT/TBS for NBA). One small complaint though - YT does a good job of extending automatically for sporting events when so far Fubo is like the old cable/satellite where it's 3 hours and that's it (it matters for taping or starting late).
   12. Walt Davis Posted: April 23, 2021 at 05:31 PM (#6015097)

Using pens and taping stuff? Next you'll be opining on the future of Mark Prior.
   13. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: April 23, 2021 at 05:39 PM (#6015099)
I'm torn - I don't want to give Marquee the satisfaction of switching providers for them, but I also don't want to give YouTube TV the satisfaction of staying with them. Maybe I'll switch to another provider that also doesn't have a Marquee contract. That'll show 'em.
   14. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: April 23, 2021 at 06:34 PM (#6015104)
But write (using a typewriter) a letter letting them know what you're doing, otherwise you'll only have a little bit of satisfaction from sticking it to them.
   15. frannyzoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:00 PM (#6015113)
My first chance to watch/listen to Cohen and the Mets crew this year. Already DeGrom and a Yo La Tengo story and reference to the band. I signed up for the radio MLB.TV this year, but the Met TV team is impossible to beat.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:09 PM (#6015114)
On the MASN broadcast, F. P. Santangelo contends that the Mets catcher is tipping DeGrom’s pitches by only setting up with the ‘Tony Pena one leg straight out’ stance for breaking balls. That knowledge hasn’t done the Nationals much good, yet.
   17. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:25 PM (#6015115)
Angels get screwed out of a run in Houston. I wish they'd get rid of replays, because they don't help umpires get any smarter, and only make it more apparent when they're wrong.
   18. JJ1986 Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:26 PM (#6015116)
Why are the Mets celebrating Jackie Robinson Day on April 23?
   19. frannyzoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:36 PM (#6015117)
RE: Jackie Robinson Day at Citi Field. Prior rainout on "the" day.
   20. Snowboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:38 PM (#6015118)
Mets originally planned it for April 42. By time they realized mistake, everyone else had already celebrated the day. #Mets
   21. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:40 PM (#6015119)
Mets-Nat scoreless in the 5th, Mets with 2 runners on and the No. 8 hitter coming up

fortunately, that's deGrom - who lashes an opposite field double down the line for a run

hapless C Nido follows haplessly, but the snaggle-toothed Nimmo bingles home two more

Mets TV crew explains that the Mets pitching coach told them deGrom has "an elite curveball" in his arsenal.
kind of overkill, at this point.

but you know how some elite pitchers reinvent themselves after their iconic fastballs fade a bit?

yeah, deGrom has a multi-year head start on that

some but not enough Mets fans bowed in "I am not worthy" mode off deGrom's double

deGrom with 12 K thru 6 scoreless, 2 hits and 0 BB
he has whiffed all 9 batters
   22. The Duke Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:47 PM (#6015120)
I was surprised at all the Cubs doom early on. It’s a good team and the division will be close. Edge has to go with brewers with those two big starters but Cubs have Heyward, Contreras, Baez, Bryant, Rizzo. That’s a pretty good squad. As long as the cardinals run carpenter out there and have their starters on the DL, they can’t compete with either team right now. Reds - hard to figure for me. They feel like a hot streak/cold streak team. Pirates are getting good performances from a bunch of guys I have never heard of. Polanco is 25% of their salary structure and he’s negative WAR

   23. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 08:48 PM (#6015121)
Yadier goes deep for the fifth time so far this season. Sad ops of 1.029 so far this season.
   24. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:03 PM (#6015122)
Mets TV just showed a replay of Lindor's emotional comments from April 15 Jackie Robinson Day.

wow. not gonna show up in the WAR value, but such a welcome addition to the country's most diverse city.
   25. JJ1986 Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:10 PM (#6015123)
What are the poor Nats supposed to do up there?
   26. frannyzoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:12 PM (#6015124)
Watching deGrom right now, regardless of who one roots for, is unparalleled. I, like many of my age of about 60, saw Maddux on WTBS circa-mid 90s. That's where we are in an uniquely Clemens 100mph style. Remarkable.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:12 PM (#6015125)
Goldschmidt drives in two for the Cardinals, to make it 3-0 for the Cardinals. Nice manufactured-lucky runs. (Pitcher reached base on a swinging strike, which then allowed Edman to turn a sure ground out into a fielders choice, and then a couple of hits later two runs have scored.
   28. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6015126)
deGrom with 14, 14, and now 15 K in his last 3 starts.
and he's only thru 7 innings so far, and has K'd the last six batters.
and a 101 on the radar gun to the last victim.

per 26 - yes, he's like Maddux for pinpoint control (0 walks, again) and Clemens for power.

it's ridiculous. 0.33 ERA this season.

deGrom coming out for the 8th, as the Mets so-so pen is shorthanded tonight.

next up likely to be the Red Sox on Wednesday, the poor bastards.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:15 PM (#6015127)
Yep... liking Carlson batting second, we have probably our top five hitters batting in the top five spots.

Arenado makes it 4-0 with a double, Yadier follows it up with another double to make it 5-0.... Yadier is having a pretty good first 20 or so games to the season.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:19 PM (#6015128)
Not sure how big of a deal this is, but Yadier with his 1000th hit at home as a Cardinal, 7th Cardinal in history to do that. I would say it's a milestone of longevity and being with a team for a long time, but not really sure how infrequent it is (don't have pi anymore--and even with that, you wouldn't be able to do more than search for hits at home through splits, but you wouldn't be able to actually figure it out with it being on one team without deeper legwork....)
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6015129)
Among Cardinal starting pitchers, if someone asked me who I would like to see start a game, Kim might be my first choice, not because he's the best pitcher or whatever, but he's a nibbler who just goes up there to pitch, I would say that the average time between him throwing pitches is about 10 seconds.
   32. frannyzoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:32 PM (#6015130)
That 8th was more Maddux than Clemens, and deGrom should come out for the complete game in the 9th, right? Are you kidding me? Hell yeah.
   33. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:35 PM (#6015131)
Hell yeah. I want that sweet, sweet CG SHO.
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6015132)
DeGrom with a measly .545 average for the season.
   35. JJ1986 Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:36 PM (#6015133)
deGrom now has more career hits than wins.
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:42 PM (#6015134)
here comes deGrom

a K-free 8th, but the 1-2-3 makes it 16 in a row.

that rapped single by deGrom - second hit of the game, and he has scored twice and leads 6-0 - produced much giggling in the Mets dugout. I mean, at least Koufax couldn't HIT ! like, at all.

crowd was chanting "MVP" not just because it's an easier chant than CY YOUNG but... just because.

1-2-3 9th, shutout on 109 pitches.

the last out comes on a grounder to deep first base, deGrom covering, the throw is high but deGrom fields it effortlessly because - yes, he's a converted shortstop.

I have often mentioned (too often?) that a life-satisfaction issue is that my buddy and I attended almost all of Doc Gooden's 1985 masterpiece home games because we had an instinct that we might not live long enough to see another like him. we were young and remember 1969 Seaver, but we were too young to choose which of those games to choose.

I've already been "released into the wild" vaccine-wise, and my pal will be next week. so we look forward to attending his next home start.
   37. Dingbat_Charlie Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:47 PM (#6015135)
That looked like postseason Arozarena.

Thirded (or more) on DeGrom, he's just ridiculous. If you like baseball, it's must watch. Bieber also, but because of his breaking pitch repertoire, where DeGrom's power and command is just insane.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:48 PM (#6015136)
cg for Degrom, the guy might someday be a decent pitcher.
   39. frannyzoo Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:49 PM (#6015137)
deGrom.

Thank you.

And time of game: 2:37.

Remember that?

   40. The Duke Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:53 PM (#6015138)
Yadier Molina with another milestone tonight getting his 2000th hit as a catcher. He got his 2000th hit late last year. He is now only the fourth catcher to ever get 2000 hits while catching behind Pudge, Kendall and Fisk. He could catch Kendall and Fisk late next year if he plays full time.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:56 PM (#6015139)

I came into this season thinking both Yadier and Wainwright are playing their last season, and if one of them gets another year, it was going to be Waino...
but
As of right now, I find it hard to think that either is in their last season in the majors... yes Waino's era is not super great, but the components (fip) is pretty good, and his last appearance really re-inspires you to confidence.
   42. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 09:57 PM (#6015140)
one of the many joys of Gooden 1985 was a camaraderie with everyone else in the ballpark.

if you love baseball, you HAVE to be there, if humanly possible.

you just do.

so everybody there is a kindred spirit.
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:01 PM (#6015141)
Have to say that it's very clear to even the announcers, and everyone watching this game that Yadier has injured himself on that first swing of this at bat. If he goes back out there defensively, then it's ridiculous.

This is why I hate teams carrying only two catchers and being afraid to bring in the backup. Yadier HAS to be pulled now. It's not even a debate, but teams might say "we don't have a backup.. to the backup."

   44. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:06 PM (#6015142)
Yadier pulled from the game. Good. There was no reason for him to go out there with 1. his clear injury and 2 a good lead for the team.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:08 PM (#6015143)
Castellanos then hits a homerun... "the villain" for Cardinal fans. (earlier in the game the Cardinal announcers said that a good rivalry has to have villains... Castellanos is the Reds villains, and Molina is the Cardinals villain.")

Funny thing is that the Cardinal fan did the Cub thing and threw the homerun back, the homerun was Castellano's 1000 major league hit, so it was a ball he wanted back anyway.

Super rare event!

Glasnow got 4 strikeouts in the first inning against the Jays...and gave up 4 runs.

That's the second time it has ever happened (4K and 4R), and the last was by Doc White on July 21, 1902.
   47. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:23 PM (#6015145)
Andrew Heaney was cruising into the 7th, but allows a double and gets pulled after 101 pitches. Next guy throws three pitches, gives up a homer, and now that 2-0 lead is gone. What a waste of Heaney's effort. Disgusting.

Joe West is still a MLB ump... I honestly did not know that. Surprisingly he was the home plate ump today, and I was impressed that the home plate ump was actually competent, to think it was Joe West, must make me think that senility has fully creeped into him.
   50. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:41 PM (#6015149)
5-1 game in just the 7th inning with two outs, and the Reds manager wastes a pinch hitter for a matchup... that is just ####### stupid.

(to clarify, the Reds bring in a left handed batter to pinch hit against the Cardinals right handed reliever, they announce the batter, the Cardinals with two outs bring in the left handed specialist.... so the Reds then pull the left handed batter to waste a bench slot and bring in a right handed batter against the lefty... again this is a 2 out situation, nobody on base, with the Cardinals leading 5-1 right now.... this is quite possibly one of the dumbest wastes, you are throwing away two batters for at best a moderate gain and at the same time, you still have 2 innings of coming back in your pocket, but you are now hampering your odds.

I really hate stupid managing. This is the definition of stupid managing.. You have the best offense in baseball, you are the one team in baseball that can come back from 5-1 with two innings to go, and you are hurting yourself with playing poor odds... save your options for better odds)
   51. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:45 PM (#6015150)
Surprised this is only deGrom’s second career shutout (and fourth complete game).
   52. Howie Menckel Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:55 PM (#6015151)
just caught up with the deGrom postgame interview on sny.tv

there appears to be nothing he is not great at.

he noted that he "hates" to leave the team early at the end of a road trip, but he was convinced to make a mid-afternoon flight from Chicago. he watched the (disastrous) game at home, and found out today that some teammates only got home at 5 am.

he said he had awesome stuff in the pre-game 'pen but that doesn't always translate so he was "a little nervous."

just a fascinating guy. I mentioned the previously-mentioned Maddux-Clemens hybrid. postgame he is more Maddux for sure (I interviewed Clemens a few times and, not a lot of clutter up top..)
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 10:56 PM (#6015152)
I know that this is the era of the reliever, and I agree with it for the most part, but there is always going to be a part of me, that is a fan of a team, that is going to have fear with the addition of each reliever. No matter the data, the fear is always that even the good guy that I trust, is going to half a half dozen off days in a season. (Gallegos had one the other day)

   54. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6015153)

I think that in a different era, DeGrom is on the short list of faces of baseball. He just seems "right"... but the era for the fans is the offensive players, and in fact there is a certain backlash against dominant pitching "too many strikeouts as a league" so DeGrom isn't getting his Pedro or Randy or Nolan fame, simply because MLB strikes out too much. Even though the fans want dominant starters, it just feels they want dominant starters who are more Maddux like than Nolan like.
   55. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:09 PM (#6015154)
Kim missed a quality start by 1 batter... for some reason Kim was pulled for no reason... the funny thing is that the Cardinals had 1 quality start after the first 13 or so starts, if Kim makes it one more batter, the Cardinals would have had 4 quality starts in a row.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:12 PM (#6015155)
Lack of communication results in a triple on a routine fly ball.

Seriously that was Williams ball, not sure why Carlson was involved in that play at all.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:16 PM (#6015156)
Damn, Hicks is just barely missing with 100 mph fast balls....

Damn... I kinda wanted to see Hicks go one more batter. He wasn't actually missing his spots, he was just close.
   58. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:20 PM (#6015157)
load em up , load em up, we're on fire!
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:21 PM (#6015158)
Reyes is no where near as close to the strike zone as Hicks was... not comfortable at all here.
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:22 PM (#6015159)
As soon as the Reds figure out not to swing, this game is in their favor.
   61. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:24 PM (#6015160)
Reyes has yet to throw a pitch in the strike zone, and is currently up 1-2 in the count.. I get that this is chess... but just don't swing if you are the reds.
   62. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:25 PM (#6015161)
And the Reds figured it out, and a run is walked in.
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:26 PM (#6015162)
8 pitches and yet Reyes has yet to throw even one single pitch in the strike zone.
   64. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:27 PM (#6015163)
9th pitch, finally in the strike zone.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:29 PM (#6015164)
I just do not get this, why swing at a pitch when the guy has not thrown a single ball in the strike zone?? I mean it helps my team, but it's very clear that Reyes doesn't have a clue where the strike zone is.
   66. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:29 PM (#6015165)
If I'm Suarez right now... I don't swing at a pitch.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:33 PM (#6015166)
seriously, he swung at ball four.... and then Reyes throws a ####### strike... literally he threw two strikes in the entire inning.
   68. cardsfanboy Posted: April 23, 2021 at 11:34 PM (#6015167)
Nobody on the planet will call that a good performance from Reyes, that was utter garbage and a #### ton of luck and stupidity from the Reds batters.

Angels bullpen blow their second 2-run lead of the night. This time Iglesias gives up the single that scores the free runner in extras, then that guy ends up scoring, too. Angels relievers have allowed 18 of 34 inherited runners to score. That's soul crushing.

win ! stop whining !

Ehh... bad managing, something I haven't seen as a Cardinal fan since the Torre era, really bothers me. Hicks was hitting his marks and not getting the calls, Kim was pulled too soon. Reyes (who I absolutely love) had a horrible night, which accentuated my point of the concept of relying on massive number of relievers per game.

I'll whine when appropriate.

Fair enough.

We've been here long enough, you know I'm an optimist and will always see the best in my team, I don't think that is a debate. But there are issues here, our manager currently pulls pitchers way too early, way too often, and doesn't recognize a bad performance with bad luck, vs a good performance with good luck.

Shildt is a players manager, which has it's value (that is what torre was also with the Yankees) and there is nothing wrong with that, but when having had two consecutive managers that actually understood and appreciated tactics like Matheny and TLR, to go to a player manager, who absolutely sucks at tactics, and even sometimes sucks at player managing, it's sad...to not recognize that Kim was kicking ass tonight, and seriously, I mean he could have gone another two innings with no effort, is ridiculous, then to bring in reliever after reliever after reliever while all the relievers wore doing the job, is just annoying, just so you can get to your closer.... for no reason in a 5-1, 5-2 game.... is horrible managing. and then to watch that guy have a melt down.... uggh... Hicks was fine for another two batters, Gallegos was fine for another two batters, Kim was fine for another batter etc.... Shildt's fascination with using 6 relievers per game is frustrating and is killing this team. )

Have you ever coached a baseball team , cards ?

Iglesias was good. Past performance and $4 will get you a good cup of coffee ... and $9.125 M ... but it won't necessarily save ballgames.

We may have found something the Dodgers suck at: pinch-hitting, 0-18 with 13 Ks.

assuming that was directed at me, nope. not sure where that is going. It already feels like an appeal to a higher authority argument, even though I'm not remotely sure where the conversation is going.

I find it humorous you think matheny was good and Shildt was bad. Matheny was a terrible tactical manager - worst I’ve ever seen. Shildt basically manages like matheny but is better at putting a good Defensive and baserunning team in the field. Each season Shildt gets more like matheny. IBBs. he’s already made 5 this year. constantly pulling pitchers all of whom could go an extra inning. Playing dead carcass’s because they are proven winners. Mozeliak got so frustrated with matheny over -using bad players he would have to trade them or demote them. How long before Mo DFAs carpenter to keep Shildt from polluting the lineup with him. It’s why we paid $16 million to make Fowler go away.

Matheny manages like a person who has read a book on baseball tactics, Shildt manages like he was sitting in the dugout in the 1920's, except he heard a rumor that you are supposed to use a minimum of 5 pitchers per game. (there is a reason the Royals are in first place and the Cardinals are not)
