It's Bobby Bonilla's favorite day of the year.

I'm thinking giant Publisher's Clearing House-style check or an agent in a suit and sunglasses with a briefcase full of cash handcuffed to his wrist.

The Royals are about to fall to 4-21 in their last 25 games. They were 29-26 on June 4!

This is brutal. Danny Santana has 5 RBI.

Maybe it's just be, but I can't seem to remember quite so many teams having a completely catastrophic stretch at the same time.
   9. Walt Davis Posted: July 01, 2021 at 06:13 PM (#6027284)
Hey now, the O's have won 3 straight, the Tigers 7 of 10, even the Rangers 6 of 10 so it's just 2 teams doing terribly right now.

But yes, starting May 1

Ari 8-48 .143
O's 15-40 .273
Pit 17-37 .315
KCR 18-37 .323
Tex 20-33 .377

But it was only as far back as 2019 when the AL trotted out 3 100+ loss teams plus a 94 and a 95, with the Tigers leading the way with a sub-300 WP. The NL tossed in the 105-loss Marlins but at least the other guys posted normal bad records. The 2018 AL was plenty embarrassing too with 3 100+ losers again, the O's under 300 and the 98-loss Tigers finishing 3rd in their division.

The DBacks could really stink. Their pythag during this streak is about twice the actual so they haven't played nearly as bad as that suggests. I calculated it yesterday and I think they were 1-15 in 1-run games in this stretch. But they actually have a number of solid, useful players on expiring contracts that they should trade -- Escobar, Asdrubal, Peralta (1 year left), Reddick if anybody wants him -- along with the actually valuable pieces of Kelly, Marte and Gallen. Their cromulent run-scoring could quickly be a thing of the past unless they decide not losing 110 games is more important.

I saw a note that the Rockies are MLB's worst road team this season, and of course they're not even the worst in their own division since the DBacks just lost an all-time record 24 in a row away from home. right?

and yet, worst road records:
COL 6-31
ARI 10-36
TEX 12-28
PIT 13-29
BAL/KC 15-28

the Rockies are a solid 28-16 at home, better than MIL HOU OAK BOS among others

The Nationals have catcher Alex Avila at 2nd base tonight, apparently a domino effect from Trea Turner being out with a finger injury. Avila has played 13 years, with 1041 MLB games, but this is his 1st appearance at 2nd base. On the shift, he’s made a few shortstop plays, looking OK … so far.

The Dodgers went with left-hander Victor Gonzalez, instead of scheduled starter Tony Gonsolin, apparently to face lefthanded batters Schwarber & Soto in the 1st, but they both got hits, leading to a run. Gonzalez was then replaced by Phil Bickford, before Gonsolin came on for the 2nd inning. #overmanagering
   12. Howie Menckel Posted: July 01, 2021 at 07:48 PM (#6027297)
deGrom had retired 37 straight batters in the first inning, meaning 1-2-3 innings in his last 12 starts.

it's the most in at least 60 years, but apparently nobody quite cares enough to dig further. I'm ok with that.

am less ok with him giving up 3 first-inning runs tonight

just like last start, he is throwing far fewer fastballs and far more sliders. not sure that's gonna work
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 01, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6027298)
am less ok with him giving up a couple of hits and a first-inning run tonight
The two subsequent 1st-inning runs must have left Howie in shock. ERA now over 1!

EDIT: I see Howie has now stealth-edited his post, so I guess he didn’t go into shock after all.
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 01, 2021 at 08:54 PM (#6027309)
There’s a flash flood alert for the Washington, DC area, so I’m guessing Dodgers @ Nationals ends early. Bad time for the Nationals to give up the lead on a 5-run top of 5th. Not raining yet, but soon.

EDIT: No rain, but tarp being put on field in DC at 9:01 PM. Audible thunder, and biblical flooding may be imminent. Tornado Warning has now interrupted the broadcast.
   15. salvomania Posted: July 01, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6027311)
DeGrom has now retired 12 in a row, 10 via strikeout, to drop his ERA back under 1.00, at 0.98.
   16. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: July 01, 2021 at 09:20 PM (#6027318)
I certainly wouldn’t mind if the Dodgers got a 5 inning win out of this, especially after Gonsolin’s disastrously short outing was going to put a strain on the bullpen.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: July 01, 2021 at 09:22 PM (#6027319)
make that 18 in a row for deGrominator.

self-immolation alert has been deactivated.
   18. salvomania Posted: July 01, 2021 at 09:23 PM (#6027320)
18 straight retired now by deGrom, probably done for the night as he leads off the bottom of the 7th, but he's only at 93 pitches, why not keep him in for one more?
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 10:07 PM (#6027330)
That was horrible... man on first, one hopper to the pitcher, the second baseman and shortstop both go to the bag to cover the bag and the pitcher throws, the second baseman for the rockies jumps up to catch the ball and doesn't even tag the bag with his feet. That was just bad... if you get a chance to see this replay (Cardinals - Rockies ) do it, because it was a sad set of communication and a lack of awareness.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 10:22 PM (#6027336)
Waino has pitched well this year, but his hr allowed has not been a pretty number. The worse part is that it feels that most of his hr allowed have been with men on base. (not sure if it's true or not, but they seem to be crooked digit hr)
   21. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: July 01, 2021 at 10:26 PM (#6027337)
Wow, the Dodgers got an assist from the rain for a win.
   22. Howie Menckel Posted: July 01, 2021 at 10:36 PM (#6027341)
Pitcher Smith, Catcher Smith, Batter Smith - something has to give in the 9th, and it's Batter Smith with a HR to tie it for the Mets.

then the Braves fail to get the ball out of the infield in the bottom of the 9th but scratch out a cheap run/win anyway.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:11 PM (#6027348)
Waino may not be elite anymore, but he's definitely solid to good.

Sadly he plans on retiring next year, which means he'll only end up with maybe 200 wins for his career. 24th all time in Cy Young shares (most among those who never won) He's definitely on the list of hovg, and is clearly not over the line of hof.... but his vg is vg.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:38 PM (#6027349)
I do wish quality starts was more respected as a stat.... to me, it's a better indicator of the quality of a pitcher than wins. (yet it doesn't even show up on bb-ref leaderboards)
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:50 PM (#6027350)
Waino going out to pitch the 8th inning at 99 pitches. 2-2 game... he hasn't been dominating, he's been good enough, one massive mistake, but it's not like he's been super sharp or anything, he's just been throwing the ball. The good thing is that he doesn't seem tired, so that helps. The thing is, that regardless of how I bag on the Cardinals, their pen is actually quite excellent, if not borderline elite.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:51 PM (#6027351)
(and of course he strikes out the first guy in the 8th)

I think that the argument about not being sharp while pitching in Colorado should not be a knock against a pitcher.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:56 PM (#6027352)
Waino... 8 ip, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk (so less than a 1.00 whip) I can live with that... 109 pitches so no chance he goes back out there for the ninth... unless DeJong hits a 3 run homerun this inning. (and even then it's still unlikely)

I get fans of other teams have their players, but to see a 39 year old like Waino that was more or less an afterthought on the free agent market making his point that he's not washed up, this is a thing that creates stories.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: July 01, 2021 at 11:59 PM (#6027353)
Cardinals still don't have a pitcher warming up in the bullpen.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2021 at 12:05 AM (#6027354)
after this many pickoff attempts, you have to go.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2021 at 12:07 AM (#6027355)
Interesting, Dan Mclaughlin pointed out, that if this game goes to extra innings Harrison Bader will be your man at second. Not a bad outcome, other than Waino isn't going to get the win.

Of course the Cardinals will still have to stop the Rockies from scoring in the 9th.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2021 at 12:09 AM (#6027356)
After the double switch, I'm not sure that is the way it works.... will have to see what happens if the Cardinals don't allow a run.

edit: re-reading the rules, it doesn't matter at this point, it's whoever made the last out of the previous inning. (the exception is the pitcher)
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: July 02, 2021 at 12:26 AM (#6027358)
####, that sucked.. a crappy hitter with power, killed one of our good relievers.
   33. Howie Menckel Posted: July 02, 2021 at 12:47 AM (#6027361)
the last real Diamondbacks save came way back on May 10, when now-DFA'd Crichton got the credit (let's not count a 3-inning garbage-time mopup SV on May 30, but either way the DBacks had a save-free June).

until tonight!

AZ took a 5-3 lead into the 9th and Joakim "The Maytag Repairman" Soria got the ball. of course he allows a walk and a single immediately - but then a double play and a K ended it.
