Mancini, Posey win Comeback Player of Year

The Orioles’ Trey Mancini and the Giants’ Buster Posey were named MLB’s Comeback Players of the Year for 2021 on Monday.

Mancini won the American League Comeback Player of the Year Award after beating colon cancer and returning to Baltimore to post the fourth 20-home run season of his career. Posey won the National League Comeback Award following one of his best seasons since winning the MVP Award in 2012, after he didn’t play at all in 2020 due to COVID concerns.

I think Posey is the only two-time winner, and one of two to win the award after announcing his retirement(Mariano Rivera).

He’s setting himself up to be a 3 time winner if he changes his mind about retirement next year.

Eduardo Rodriguez got hosed!

OK, not really. Mancini is obviously the right choice. Just as a Rodriguez fan under normal circumstances he'd have been a no brainer choice. I love Mancini though and seeing him bounce back was great. It is really remarkable that people can have cancer, get treated, and come back like him or Galarraga or Lester or so many others. What modern medicine has done is just incredible sometimes.

I guess it depends on the actual criteria, but it seems like a quarter of the Giants' roster had notable comeback seasons.

I expect Posey will also win Go Away Player of the Year. Is he the catcher on the "Best Last Season" all-star team?

Is he the catcher on the "Best Last Season" all-star team?

Will clark-1B
Ted Williams-LF
David Ortiz-DH
Mike Mussina-SP

I'm at work and don't have time to do the rest...

Sandy Koufax - SP
   8. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:14 PM (#6054391)
Kirby Puckett - CF
   9. Nasty Nate Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:16 PM (#6054392)
Jose Fernandez
Roberto Clemento
put Bonds in CF I guess
   10. Jaack Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:20 PM (#6054394)
Just to take a stab - not including any Black Sox or sudden, tragic death guys

C-Buster Posey
1B-Will Clark
2B-Jackie Robinson
SS-Luis Aparicio? I can't think of a good choice here
3B-Chipper Jones
LF-Ted Williams/Barry Bonds
CF-Jim Edmonds
RF-Roy Cullenbine
DH-David Ortiz

SP-Sandy Koufax
SP-Mike Mussina
SP-Curt Schilling
SP-Larry Jackson
SP-Larry French
CL-Billy Wagner

Puckett works in center too. Lofton's a solid choice as well.
   12. Nasty Nate Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:21 PM (#6054396)
Ozzie Smith was OK at the end I guess?

Going through Stathead;

1B - Roy Cullenbine -4.4 WAR - 1947
2B - Larry Doyle - 3.3 - 1920 (Benny McCoy had 4.1 as a 24 year old in 1941, presumably he went off to WWII)
3B - Jackie Robinson - 4.5 - 1956
SS - Luis Aparicio 2.6 - 1973 (Ray Chapman - 4.0 - 1920 but obviously he didn’t retire)
LF - Barry Bonds 3.4 - 2007 (Shoeless Joe all time leader best last season but again, didn’t retire)
CF - Chick Stahl 4.1 - 1906 (Happy Felsch second all time but Shoeless Joe teammate)
RF - Kirby Puckett - 3.1 - 1995 (Roberto Clemente 4.1 but didn’t retire)
C - Dave Nilsson -2.6 - 1996
DH - David Ortiz - 5.2 - 2016 (3rd All Time)

#10, I still see Puckett's 3 WAR as higher then Edmonds...unless I'm missing someone. Or has Nate points out, put Bonds in CF.
Thanks for the others though, it's a fun list.

Pitchers (not counting dead ball or suspended/dead people);

Sandy Koufax 10.3 - 1966
Mike Mussina 5.1 - 2008
Dutch Ulrich 4.7 - 1927
Britt Burns 4.2 - 1985
Curt Schilling 4.0 - 2007

And top five in saves

Mariano Rivera - 44 - 2013
Robb Nen - 43 - 2002
Jeff Shaw - 43 - 2001
Billy Wagner - 37 - 2010
Tom Henke - 36 - 1995

I’ve gotta say for an off the top of his head list #10 is really good. Cullenbine played more first his last year and Jackie played more 3rd but still, impressive.
   17. Jaack Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:30 PM (#6054402)
I think Edmonds was probably better game for game - bat is about the same, glove definitely better. Puckett had twice as many PAs though, so it's close between them for me.

And for guys who played at least 100 games, your lineup of guys who should have retired a year earlier;

1B - Yuniesky Betancourt -2.3 2013
2B - Fred Rayner -2.5 1905
3B - Pedro Feliz -2.4 2010
SS - Jim Levey -4.0 1933 (you’re all time “leader”)
LF - Jeffrey Leonard -1.7 1990
CF - Brian McRae - 2.1 1999
RF - Willie McGee -2.8 1999
C - John Bateman -1.3 1972
DH - George Bell -2.5 1993
   19. Jose is Absurdly Correct but not Helpful Posted: November 23, 2021 at 09:40 PM (#6054407)
And obviously Posey at 3.5 WAR is the leader at catcher. My Stathead search eliminated 2021.
   20. vortex of dissipation Posted: November 23, 2021 at 11:54 PM (#6054441)
CF - Chick Stahl 4.1

Kind of a sad story, because he committed suicide prior to the next season...
   21. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 24, 2021 at 12:32 AM (#6054442)

Interesting lists. I would note that Bonds didn't really retire after 2007, either.
   22. Jose is Absurdly Correct but not Helpful Posted: November 24, 2021 at 02:11 PM (#6054481)
Didn't know that about Stahl.

Yeah Bonds is a tricky one. Given his age and accomplishments considering him "retired" makes sense but of course it wasn't entirely voluntary.

Man, did I really use the wrong form of "your" in #18? What the #### Jose?

Lou Brock is a good one given his prior two years production.
