Manny Machado leaves loss with left ankle sprain | ESPN

DENVER—San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado left Sunday’s 8-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies after injuring his left ankle while taking a tumble at first base trying to beat out an infield grounder.

Machado’s leg appeared to turn awkwardly while he was running to first base in the top of the first inning. He struggled to put weight on the ankle as he was helped off the field. Machado was later diagnosed with an ankle sprain after X-rays came back negative.

The Rockies completed the sweep of the Padres, knocking them out of first place. The Rox have won ten straight over the Padres at Coors Field. It's just the games against other teams at other stadiums that give them trouble.

The Padres don't have much of an offense without Machado, do they? Hosmer might be the cleanup hitter

A Tatis return would obviously be helpful. Cronenworth is a good bat, Voit should at least be solid, Profar and Alfaro are having good years but will probably tail off along with Hosmer. Presumably this leads to the recall of top-10 prospect SS CJ Abrams -- he struggled in April but has hit 314/364/507 at AAA since.

Karmic retribution for all the times he spiked first basemen making routine plays on him at first.
