Manny, Pedro and Papi’s kids are on the same team?! Meet ‘The Sons’ of the Brockton Rox

BROCKTON, Mass.—As outfielder Pedro Martinez Jr., first baseman Manny Ramirez Jr., third baseman D’Angelo Ortiz, outfielder Jaden Sheffield and pitcher Kade Foulke chat in the batting cages, general manager Tom Tracey shoos away fans loitering outside Campanelli Stadium, hoping to get a glimpse of the players known collectively as “The Sons.”

“Brockton High School is next door,” Tracey says. “There are always people hanging around trying to see what’s happening here.”

Indeed, word has been spreading around New England. About an hour drive from Fenway Park, baseball fans can watch the sons of MLB royalty play—on the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Once there, they might see Hall of Famer David Ortiz helping players fine-tune their swings, Manny Ramirez demonstrating how to lay off the curveball, Keith Foulke—the former Red Sox closer who threw the last pitch of the 2004 World Series—raking the infield dirt, or Pedro Martinez and Gary Sheffield watching from one of the suite boxes.

“I really didn’t understand how big [my father] was until he got into the Hall of Fame. ... Like, that’s Mookie Betts talking to him like he’s someone cool, treating him like he’s royalty. Why is this guy talking to my weird, dork dad? He spends his time at home taking care of his flowers.” Pedro Martinez Jr.

Lenny Dykstra junior plays on an opposing team. When he found out who these kids were, he said, "I'm going to beat 'em."

My son once played on a Little League team that had two sons of former major leaguers on it. They were both the sons of Pedro Astacio, and they were both named Pedro (the younger one was called "Pedrine").

Quote of the year!

Pedro Martinez Jr., first baseman Manny Ramirez Jr., third baseman D’Angelo Ortiz, outfielder Jaden Sheffield and pitcher Kade Foulke

One of those dads is not like the others. 2 HoFers, 2 with HoF numbers ... Keith Foulke (a fine pitcher for sure but...)

I once dated a woman from a seriously Catholic family (as in drove 2 hours for a Latin mass) and all of the daughters (5 if I recall) were named Mary. Three went by their middle names, the other two were Mary B and Mary C (or whatever).

You're right. Only one of them helped choke away a 3-0 series lead!

I played Little League against Derek Wathan, a former minor leaguer and son of catcher John Wathan. His dad was fired as manager of the Royals, and a few weeks later was in the third base coach against our team.

Gold Wife is from a seriously Catholic family (not sure how far they drove for Mass - but as this was central Iowa, I'm fairly certain it was in English). It is tradition in her family that the newborn girls trade off being named either Margaret or Mary. (Gold Wife's oldest sister has the latter name.) Gold Mother-in-Law presented this to my wife, who proceeded to practically laugh in her face and declare that tradition was D-E-A-D as far as we were concerned.

I've stuck with this site through years of OTP enmity bleeding into the main threads, the slow gradual disappearance of many regulars, and the waning of my own interest in contemporary MLB, but man if someone with the keys to the site doesn't start nuking these jackass spammer accounts with extreme prejudice, I don't know how much longer I can hang on.

I wish I knew how to do that Pat but that's beyond my technical wisdom.

Because we certainly don't want kids to get interested in the team or its players! (They might attend a game or something...!)

Why is this guy talking to my weird, dork dad?

There's a video clip out there of Bo Jackson trying to make conversation with a polite but bored kid at White Sox spring training:

"And then I won the Heisman Trophy. Do you know what that is? It's the trophy they give to the best player in all of College Football!"

Sic transit gloria mundi.
