Manny, Tatis have heated dugout exchange

When cameras near the dugout caught images and sound of Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. arguing loudly Saturday night in St. Louis, the perception outside the team emerged that infighting has infected the Padres as their quest for the postseason hits rocky ground.

The team pushed back on that narrative after their 3-2 loss to Cardinals cost them ground in the National League Wild Card race, saying Machado was showing leadership to a younger player.

The theme of the argument seemed to be that Machado thought Tatis was dwelling too long on being called out on strikes by umpire Phil Cuzzi in the fifth inning. Machado, in the videos, can be heard yelling, “You go play baseball!” and, “It’s not about you!” while he gestured in Tatis’ direction.

“It’s not viewed negatively,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. “I’m sure people on the outside think whatever they think, but we’re a family. We’re not going to discuss details, but we care. There’s passion, there’s frustration. Those things are natural, but it comes down to a group of men caring.”

Machado then added, "You throw the bat at that ************* pitcher and you hit that ************* catcher in the head with your backswing and you spike the next ************* guy you slide into! That's how you handle it like a man!"

props to the 2021 Padres, who - after more than 50 years of irrelevance - finally achieved the status of being, well, annoying.

always nice to add a new team worth rooting against; it happens so rarely.

The Padres don’t have a ton of payroll flexibility for next year so their options are:

1) hope for better pitching health
2) let Preller go wild and see what happens

Either way, Tingler is probably toast. Preller never seems to face any accountability when his moves blow up so no reason to expect that to change now.

I'm surprised they're heating the dugouts in St. Louis, I thought it's still pretty mild there in September.

They (or at least their GM) make the off-season incredibly exciting, by constantly churning the roster and moving parts around. It is as if Preller gets bored riding his bike around in perfect 80 degree weather in December, and he just starts working the phones. I think this is why sports-writers love them so much; the Padres provide good copy when there is nothing else going on in baseball.

He dropped a short fly ball with the bases loaded and nobody out during yesterday's first inning, and had a short throw to second to get an easy force---and instead rushed a throw home that had no chance to get the runner.

Cardinals went on to score five runs that inning, and held on for an 8-7 win that pushed the Pads one step closer to elimination.
