Marcus Hayes: Zack Wheeler, Mike Trout consider opting out, abandoning their teams and the game

None of the players who have chosen to extend their vacation has been deemed high-risk, but most cite protecting people with whom they live. There’s a solution to that.

Move out.

You might miss a birth, or the first few weeks of your kid’s life, or back-to-school 2020. But you will be protected, and you will be tested, and you will be doing your job.

Because that’s what it is. A job. Players were hired to comprise a team with the goal of winning a championship, no matter how asterisked the season becomes. These players were hired to display their skills and drive an industry.

If that sounds insensitive, consider the battleship cruises that separate people from their husbands and wives and parents and children for months, with zero five-star hotels, Michelin three-star restaurants, or first-class airplane seats.

Want to protect your family when teams have begun to travel? Fine. Rent an apartment. Or crash with a teammate. But get up, go to work, do your job, come home. Wash your hands. And wear a mask, dammit. Create the bubble your union was too shortsighted to create for you.

Somehow I think that serving on a battleship (??) weighs a bit differently in the scale than playing baseball.

"You'll be protected" is a bold claim that doesn't appear to be backed up so far, what with the number of players already testing positive.

You might miss the birth of your child. Or get a debilitating illness. But that's a small price to pay to provide me with column fodder for as long as the season lasts, which may be just a few weeks.

#### this guy.

Marcus Hayes is such a pompous ass, who seldom has much of an insight about anything.

I’m not clicking on this obvious clickbait. I’ve never heard of Marcus Hayes before and I have now. He’s a piece of ####.

Marcus Hayes thinks is 1986 and the Coronvirus is a threat to the 600 ship Navy...bring back the Iowa or the Soviets and Coronvirus win.

Drama queen, Mr Hayes is. Thank you for your service, Mr. Keyboard Warrior.

Oh actually a nice gentleman working the phone in the sports newsroom let me know they’re closed for the pandemic. So how bout you get up, go to work, in your home office and keep your opinions about this to people that actually do leave the house

Those positive tests came from when the players were on their own. The protection comes from adhering to the team-provided bubble for virus-free players and staff. It remains to be seen how well that works, but I think those inside that bubble (and their families) will have to severely limit their contacts outside the bubble for it to be viable. However, those positive tests on arrival may suggest not everyone got the message or adhered to the policy, so MLB & the MLBPA may have some work to do.

Yes, Clapper, we get that the new GOP talking point is "Go back to the office! It's safer!"

This is weird. Hayes has been writing in Philly for a long time without particularly sticking out as a jackass. If anything, he's usually so bland that he barely attracts any notice.

I mean even if you ignore the virus it's basically like they're taking unpaid vacation time. Which, sure, I guess means they're temporarily "abandoning their teams and the game" but who really gives a ####, especially in these circumstances?

I regret giving him a click.

If Hoskins were to sit out, he would forfeit about $225,000, which would account for about 12% of his career earnings. Of course, Hoskins is probably a bad example, since he’d play through the Black Plague, the Spanish flu, and the Inquisition.
So he's calling Rhys Hoskins an irresponsible idiot, or at least an addict.

   18. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 08, 2020 at 07:54 PM (#5961806)
How old is this guy? It's been what, 50 years since the days when men were expected to not give a #### about being there for the birth of their child. Which is an absolutely priceless experience, and to suggest that a guy is somehow unmanly by valuing it over his "duty" to work AS AN ENTERTAINER...no, Mr Hayes, that doesn't sound insensitive. Try utterly and completely tone-deaf, with perhaps a side helping of terminal assholery.

But thanks for sharing your opinion.

Hayes is a 1990 grad of Syracuse, he'd be 52ish.
   20. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 08, 2020 at 08:39 PM (#5961817)
Good god, Edmundo, he's 52 going on Murray Chass-ish.

Based on the excerpt and headline, it's a vile article. If you're gonna try to destroy people for their sensible decisions, at least save your outrage until Trout actually opts out. Or slam David Price and Ryan Zimmerman and others who have actually done it. This also has the old "Chris Truby and Albert Belle" feel to it -- Wheeler signed with the Phils this offseason, Trout's just here to draw attention.
   22. Rally Posted: July 09, 2020 at 11:53 AM (#5961883)
I expect Trout to not be there at the start of the season and wish only the best for him, Jessica, and baby Trout. I hope that he doesn't have to opt out of the full season, and that the Angels and MLB make this a flexible decision so that he can opt out for the birth of his child, stay out for a few weeks after, and opt back in for September and maybe play 30 games this year.

But if they make opt-out an inflexible yes/no option, then by all means Mike, opt out and best wishes to your family.

Unfortunately, the reaction "well, that sounds reasonable and carefully argued" doesn't do a lot to drive internet traffic.

Doo doo doo doo....

he's always been a smarmy jackass.

does hayes have any nieces or grandchildren?

22. If his wife says I want you to be around for the baby and he says “just tell me when and where”, I’d start to be concerned if I were his wife

If I had Trout money, I'm not worried about "a job". I'm assuming he is ok financially if he retired tomorrow. If Trout sits, someone who might need the pay a lot more can come up from the non-existant minors, right?

Marcus Hayes @inkstainedretch
Andrew McCutchen, coming off knee surgery, doubles to LF but kind of hobbles into 2B. Waves off a replacement.

andrew mccutchen @TheCUTCH22
Idk the hobble u speak of? Maybe that’s my swag level on Hundred points symbol pulling into 2nd for a STAND UP double. And def didnt wave off a replacement. I know it’s hard to see things from the suites but lets not start things that arent true
