Marcus Stroman fires back after announcer disses his doo rag: ‘Racist undertones’

Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman responded on social media late Tuesday night after an Arizona Diamondbacks broadcaster mocked him for wearing a doo rag under his cap.

Stroman fired off a series of tweets critical of former D-backs manager turned analyst Bob Brenly, after Brenly dissed Stroman’s patented doo rag, which he has taken to wearing in recent years to hold back his long hair.

Brenly, who won a World Series as Arizona’s manager back in 2001, bizarrely brought up Mets legend Tom Seaver, to contrast his style with Stroman’s.

“I’m sure that’s the same doo rag that Tom Seaver used to wear when he pitched for the Mets,” Brenly said during the home half of the fourth inning.

The remark was picked up on Mets Twitter, where not only were fans miffed by the ham-handed comment, but Stroman himself seemed apoplectic after apparently learning of the situation following the game.

Responding to the episode, Stroman excoriated Brenley for the “racist undertones” of his lame observation, and promised to move “onward and upward.” The right-hander also retweeted a series of fans calling for Brenly to be sacked, as well as one who called his comments “sick” and another who called the incident “embarrassing.”

Let's get to the important question here; "doo rag" or "do rag?" I thought it was the latter (as in "hair-do").

At local convenience stores, there is a brand that spells it Du-Rag.

I've never seen "doo rag" before, but, granted, I am not someone generally in need of one. I saw "Du-Rag" first, which is why I always stumble when "DORAG" shows up in crosswords.

I always wonder if people who stay stuff like this are stirring up controversy on purpose or if they are honestly shocked when people push back at them for being ignorant (at best). Especially in this case where it's not like there's an article of clothing flying all over the place that could be a potential distraction to the better, so Brenly could at least pretend it's not some kind of backwards social commentary.

Is there other evidence Brenly is racist? Could it have been just a cheap joke that fell flat?

What a way to torpedo you’re long term contract this winter. Sign the long term deal first before throwing bombs. Even prince Harry knew that.

From the article it sounds like the latter. At least in terms of intent. Like a lot of things I think there are racist undertones to it that probably never even occurred to Brenly. But reading this it seems like it was more a "ha ha, I'm old and this is different so let's laugh about that" rather than "these people need to play the game the right way."

I just had a customer tell me he'd pay by check but there was a 50-50 chance it would be a "Chinese check", which I'd never heard but it sounded racist and I cringed when he said "You know that that means, right??" . . . cringe . . . bracing myself . . .

He goes "that means it'll bounce all the way to China". I can't find that phrase on UD or elsewhere on the internet.

In summation: I have no real point but sometimes people just say strange things.

fwiw, ymmv

“During last night’s game, I made a poor attempt at humor that was insensitive and wrong,” Brenly finally admitted in a statement hours after the team said they were “reviewing” the offensive comment. “I apologize to Marcus Stroman and have reached out directly to share those thoughts.

”I have had several conversations with the D-backs and we agree that seeking sensitivity training is an important step so that I can continue to learn from my mistakes in order to be better in the future.”

As expected, Brenly said that it was “just a joke.”

Well, there's this. YMMV whether you consider it racist or not. Machado may not always get the benefit of the doubt but I don't see that he committed a transgression here.

Really? He dropped his bat where the catcher could potentially trip over it.

I wouldn't say racist, but during his time with the Cubs, I recall him being pretty outspoken about some of the gaudier accessories some players wore on the field.

I tend to lean toward it being a dumb joke from an old school guy who's not a fan of players wearing accessories on the field.
   18. JJ1986 Posted: June 02, 2021 at 04:15 PM (#6022148)
Brenly probably is "joking" but his joke is based on his idea that 'regular' pitchers look like Tom Seaver and differences from that are noteworthy.
   19. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: June 02, 2021 at 04:29 PM (#6022151)
It is easy to describe actions, typically harder to ascribe motives. And there is some overlap between his comment being "racist" and his comment being "an old school guy being a d*ck about players not playing the game the way they did back in my day." The "right way" to wear your uniform or follow "unwritten rules" often has an element of race, ethnicity, or country of origin associated with it, even if it is unspoken.

But separate from all that...of all players to use as part of the joke, Brenly uses...Tom Seaver. Why? I think understanding that would probably go a long way to understanding the true motive behind Brenly's comment.

If it is more of a racial thing, then was Brenly subconsciously saying that Seaver was pretty much the "whitest" pitcher he could think of?

If it is more of a "old school" thing, then Seaver was one of the iconic players in baseball when Brenly was growing up. Seaver also died recently, so he might be more in the front of a lot of our minds as baseball fans than he otherwise would be.

If it is more of a "you suck, Marcus" thing, then Seaver is one of the all-time greats, and probably the greatest pitcher of Brenly childhood, and Brenly was being a d*ck who was belittling Strohman's pitching abilities compared to the an all-time great.

I would be curious what Brenly would have said if he had been asked right after the game - or even better, right after the remark - why he chose Seaver. But by now he probably has a rehearsed and careful answer...
   20. JJ1986 Posted: June 02, 2021 at 04:33 PM (#6022152)
My guess is that Seaver was on Brenly's mind because the Mets have a '41' patch on their jerseys.
   21. filihok Posted: June 02, 2021 at 07:10 PM (#6022189)
Why Seager?

They are both Mets? Seaver is one of the all-time most known Mets pitchers. He did not use Dwight Golden.
   22. Walt Davis Posted: June 02, 2021 at 10:18 PM (#6022227)
FWIW (not a lot) the Urban Dictionary has durag, du rag, doo-rag and do rag listed. There is also the pun (?) "dew rag" where "dew" is sperm.

There are also various definitions related to "Seaver" which I will leave you to look up on your own but I am pretty sure Mr. Brenly (and 99.999999999% of the rest of the US population) is unaware of. I suspect even more rare is the use of "Brenly" (or "Brenley") which seems to mean a happy, supportive woman who is also athletic, sexy and totally wanting to get down to it with the right guy. I can't make this stuff up but somebody did ... in that the UD seems to accept entries from any random, drunk white person these days.

[22] Yes, anybody can make an Urban Dictionary account and post definitions. The only accountability is that the public can downvote your definition.

Not exactly, IMHO. Nothing in his apology indicates that he thinks it's "just" a joke. He doesn't try to minimize the impact or shift the blame to others for misinterpreting. He admits fault, apologizes, and indicates that he agrees that he needs sensitivity training.

   27. Ron J Posted: June 03, 2021 at 12:33 PM (#6022317)

#35 Kind of covered in Ball Four. Steve Hovely stopped hearing comments about his hair (which of course was nothing like Clevinger's, but it was 1969) when he got hot.

Clevinger's been pretty good for a while and people will generally put up with a lot in that case.

And yes, he's injured now. Also out of the public eye.
