Marcus Stroman Opts Out Of 2020 Season

The Mets announced Monday that right-hander Marcus Stroman has opted out of the remainder of the 2020 season. The right-hander, who is a free agent at season’s end, called the move a family decision and cited the many “uncertainties” and “unknowns” of playing in the current health-and-safety atmosphere.

Nobody seems to want to play for the Mets....

It's good to see a player manipulate the service time requirements in their favour for once.

Stroman's not a Kris Bryant or some of the more egregious manipulations. It is true that he made 26 appearances, 20 starts, and threw 130 innings in 2014 without accruing a full year of service, so when that year was up the Jays had 6 more years. But they didn't:

A) bring him up after 2 starts or whatever in AAA, to get 30 big league starts without giving him a full year of service time
B) wait until after the super 2 deadline, so that he would not have been arbitration eligible until he had 3+ years in the bigs*. Stroman was eligible for arbitration after the 2016 season as a super 2, and made 3.4 million in 2017.

But yeah, even as a non-extreme case, playing for a different team that brought him up, it's good to see a player benefit from this service time game too.

*See Mookie for a good example in the same year. After the 2016 season, when he finished 2nd in the MVP race with 9.5 WAR, he had 2 full years plus his debut season, but did not make the super 2 cutoff. His 2017 salary was only 950k.

Is here where I admit that I was pretty sure Stroman was going to be a averagish #4 who broke our hearts with crap starts anyhow? Maybe I'm conditioned, but I was never that excited about him.

I thought he was going to be reasonably good, but this season is basically an exhibition season anyway, so no great loss. It would be great if the Mets won playoff games, but not as meaningful as in a real season.

Steve Cohen needs to get here right away and buy us a bunch of stuff.

He was probably never going to be that great in front of the Mets’ defense, but every team could use dependable averageish starters. Plus he’s a local guy.

First time I saw Stroman pitch he made a very good impression on me. This game.

But the competition wasn't exactly MLB. The guy who hit a homer off him (and also struck out 3 times) I understand went into sales, and is now deceased. But I might be confusing him with Willie.

I've had enough of these Stroman arguments.
