Mariah Carey reveals the two songs she wrote about ex Derek Jeter

In a recent interview with Vulture, the 50-year-old singer discussed her forthcoming memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” confirming fan speculation that her 1997 song, “The Roof,” is about the former Yankees captain, 46, recalling a kiss they shared on the roof of his apartment building.

“Of course I do! I can never forget that moment,” Carey said, also detailing how she wore a “buttery leather Chanel skirt.”

“I mean, it’s not like it was some intensely deep, intellectually stimulating — again, it was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way because it helped me get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.”

“Sing Sing,” the name of a New York prison, has been used to describe Carey’s home with first husband Tommy Mottola, whom she was married to from 1993-1998.

She also did a cover of the Ray Charles song "Don't Put All Your Dreams in One Basket"

Additionally, 1997’s “My All” from the Grammy winner is also about Jeter, noting she risked it all to have an evening with the Miami Marlins co-owner in Puerto Rico.
The song actually applies to all owners of the Marlins.

The first verse of "My All":
I am thinking of you
In my sleepless solitude tonight
If it's wrong to love you
Then my heart just won't let me be right
'Cause I've drowned in you
And I won't pull through
Without you by my side
Drowning and not being able to pull through without a certain shortstop's help? Are we sure the song isn't about Nomar?

I think the writer simply misunderstood, not realizing Jeter wasn't the owner in 1997. Mariah wrote this song about her romance with Wayne Huizenga.

If she'd written a song about Nomar the song would not have lasted nearly as long.

I remember when some people insisted her songs about Rey Ordonez were better.

Mariah Carey had way more range than Derek Jeter.

Leonard Cohen had way more range than Derek Jeter.

Mariah Carey wrote/writes her own songs? I'm...skeptical.

Her songs are mostly co-written. She supposedly works with someone at a piano and mainly sings out ideas, which they then bounce back and forth off of each other. She's famous for having perfect pitch over an insane vocal range, so it's certainly possible for her to work well and precisely this way. It's worth noting that she was credited as a co-songwriter on every song on her first album, back when she had zero sway in the industry.

The “co-written” claim is a pretty standard way that labels and managers try to get cred/legitimacy for pop singers.

With an emphasis on "insane".

She probably co-wrote this Tweet-

Mariah Carey
@MariahCarey
She has 2 Nobel prizes, I have 2 Diamond albums, we're practically the same person

Eileen Mary O’Connell

And that's before we even talk about her singing.

I just hope this inspires other singer-songwriters to reveal the two songs they wrote about Derek Jeter.

R.E.M. wrote a song about a typical two-hopper up the middle ("Can't Get There from Here") and a song about Jeter's five Gold Gloves ("The Worst Joke Ever").

Mariah Carey reportedly likes to eliminate the other "co-" in her co-writer's credit for her most enduring song.

That's an odd article about odd behavior. But it also completely refutes the assertion in #12 with regards to Carey's songwriting.

Very, very, very rare that someone can mic-drop on Gonfalon. Well done.

Yeah - I'm generally skeptical of all pop singers' songwriting claims, but his story backs her up.

"Your feet are going to be on the ground // Your head is there to move you around" ... I mean ... ummm ... I just ... wow.
