Mariners Blog | Coming soon to a theatre near you: the Steve Delabar story

Delabar was a 29th round draft pick of the Padres in 2003 who’d played five seasons of pro ball and topped out at Class A.

He then pitched in the independent leagues in 2008 and 2009. His arm was tiring in 2009, but his coach, despite Delabar’s protests, insisted he was needed to finish off a game. He heard his elbow pop while throwing a pitch, then saw the bone jutting out from his skin as he stared at the painful fracture.

“There was a point when I first went to the High A team…I’d given up a couple of runs in a game and I’m pretty much the oldest guy in the league and I’m thinking ‘What am I really doing? Am I wasting my time?’,’’ Delabar said. “And then, I had a few good outings in a row and then I got promoted. I said ‘Let’s go with this.’ I’d never played in AA before, so it was ‘Let’s see what happens. I had a couple of good outings and then you start rolling from there. A couple of good months and you get promoted again.’‘

The M’s promoted him to AAA, liked what Delabar did in 10 outings, posting a 0.69 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings, then shocked him with the ultimate promotion.

don’t think there’s actually a movie in the works just yet, but this is a pretty freaking cool story.

Cool story, but "the ultimate promotion" sounds like it involves Marshall Applewhite and Nikes.

It's a pretty cool story. Even better: it made me realize (I'm late, I know...) that BRef had stats about independant baseball*. Up until now, I was still using the baseball cube. I won't anymore.

*Not that I love indy baseball, btw, but as it's the only thing we have up here ever since the Expos left, I have no choice. Beside, Les Capitales are a pretty cool bunch and are extremely professional (which isn't common in indy baseball).

i'm very interested in this new way to teach pitching

i hope delabar is a successful major leaguer for a long time. i root for guys like him

my astros had a guy kind of like him - got hurt, left baseball, became a coach, healed from his injuries, went back, did well until effed by his Organization who made him pitch when he was obviously hurting - a guy named chris sampson
