Marlins apologize for Steve Irwin death tweet: ‘This was definitely a miss’

The Miami Marlins got in a back-and-forth Twitter conversation with the Tampa Bay Rays following their series Sunday, and it eventually led to the Marlins’ social team going all-out.

The tweet gained plenty of attention (mostly praise), but on Monday, the Marlins apologized.

“This was a regrettable exchange by our otherwise creative social media team. Unfortunately, in this medium, sometimes we swing and miss, and this was definitely a miss,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson added: “The matter has been addressed internally.”

How low can Derek Jeter go?

Things are pretty low when David Samson feels comfortable pointing down at you from the moral high ground.

I honestly thought it was pretty funny?

I don't think the Tweet was problematic. They weren't making fun of Steve Irwin.

Edit: I honestly thought it was pretty funny?

Agree.

This has got to be a first, me defending the Marlins.

Well sure it was funny, but at some point you need to realize your OFFICIAL social media is being seen by provincial 80-year-olds and 8-year-olds as well as people who spend all day owning each other with memes. Same deal with the Rockets sending the Mavericks emojis of a horse getting shot. Not appropriate.

Crikey!

I hope the folks bothered by the Marlins' tweet aren't familiar with Norm MacDonald.

Totally fair, but this was the MARLINS. They shouldn't have any expectation that anyone, of any age, should ever learn anything about their activities, even accidentally.

The Rays' mascot was the first to bring up the team's murder of Steve Irwin! That was in 2013, but the team murdered Irwin in 2006. Back when men were real men, women were real women, and rays were devil rays.

The Rays twitter account is the dumbest of all. They literally celebrated "took them to extras again to beat us" after losing a second game in extras to the Yankees.

So they deserve all of it.

That's dumb as a bag of rocks.

From the devil ray wikipedia page:

Despite their size, little is known about the devil rays, much of it being from anecdotal accounts, whereas the manta rays are better known. Most species entirely lack a tail stinger. In most species having a stinger, it is encased, rendering it harmless;

So, not only is 13 years too soon to make light of Irwin's death, but, the Marlins weren't even correct!

I find the tweet neither offensive nor funny. But companies officially engaging in "back-and-forth Twitter conversation" is the height of unprofessionalism. I get that it was written by some 22-year-old "social media manager" who is trying to be funny and engaging with fans, but surely I'm not the only one who finds the whole image very off-putting. (From what I've seen, this goes for every team's Twitter account, not just these examples.)

The real dick was the guy who was so upset and offended by it, that they copied Steve Irwin's daughter in to their reply "because if someone was making fun of my dad's death I'd want to know". Yeah, right.

It's Twitter. I see nothing wrong with and entertainment business trying to have fun with its fans. Why does anyone care if a sports team is professional?

Arguably the two funniest minutes in the history of television.
