Marlins believe throwing more strikes will lead to more wins

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Midway through Ryne Stanek’s first throwing session of spring training with the Miami Marlins, he was interrupted by pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr.

Stanek’s fastball kept sailing inside.

“If you find yourself missing consistently in the same area ...” Stottlemyre said, embarking on a discourse about arm angles, eye focus and release points —that is, how to throw strikes.

Strikes were a problem for the Marlins last year. They led the majors with 615 walks and led the National League with 105 losses, which is not a coincidence.

That Marlins management thinks this is news probably explains a lot about much of that team’s history.

Yeesh. I guess this is what a spring training story looks like when you are a 100-loss team.

Just wait 'til they figure out about getting runners on base. They'll be an absolute juggernaut.

Another way to succeed: score more runs than you give up.

Sounds like another one of those things the front office Ivy League sabermetricians thought up.

Stanek had a 3.40 ERA in Tampa last year, with 20 BB in 56 IP.
then Stanek got dealt to Miami - where he had 19 BB in 21 IP.

seems cruel that they waited til just now to teach him this "strikes" thing that he seemed respectable at in Tampa before the move.

Hey, I didn't know there was a Mel Stottlemyre Jr.

Seems he was in the majors from July to September of 1990 with the Royals.

Correct, it's not a coincidence ... but it's hardly determinative. The Marlins, for example, were very much dead last in RS/G, nearly a full run below league-average. Scoring about 162 fewer runs than the average team probably has more impact on W-L than giving up 83 more walks than the average team. In fact they took 137 fewer walks than the average team (also last). They were also last in HR and OPS+ and hit into the most DP which is kinda counter-intuitive given their sub-300 team OBP (you guessed it, last). On the bright side, they left the 2nd fewest runners on base.

But hey, they were 4th in complete games with 2!

From a WAA perspective, the staff was 6 wins below average thanks to the worst bullpen; offensively they were 15 wins below average. Relative to rest of league they were fine at C and SS and pretty terrible everywhere else. Granted, there's probably not a lot Mel Stottlemyre, Jr can do about the offense so he probably should preach throwing strikes.

EDIT: I also meant to point out the 2003 Cubs, an example I'm familiar with, who were 14th in walks taken (50 below league average) and last in walks allowed (617, 68 more than league average) and won the division with 88 wins and stumbled against ... the Marlins of course.

The problem is, if you start preventing runs, and reaching base and stuff, your players get expensive. Can't have that.

your players get expensive

Then you trade for more guys who need to be taught to throw strikes and not swing at balls. It's the journey, man, not the destination.

Do we have to have a Red Sox hijack in every thread?
