Marlins’ Pablo Lopez strikes out first 9 Braves batters for modern-era MLB record

Atlanta Braves batters had no answers for Pablo Lopez their first time through the order on Sunday.

The Miami Marlins pitcher stuck out the first three batters he faced in the NL East matchup. He then repeated the effort in the second and third innings, setting a modern-era (post 1900) MLB record by striking out nine consecutive batters to start a game.

His strikeout of pitcher Ian Anderson to end the third inning was his last of the day. But nine was enough as Lopez picked up the win in a 7-4 victory over the Braves. He finished the day allowing three earned runs in six innings with two walks to go with his nine strikeouts.

Lopez’s effort breaks the previous modern-era record of eight strikeouts to start a game held by German Marquez (2018), Jacob deGrom (2014), and Jim Deshaies (1986). Mickey Welch stuck out the first nine batters he faced while pitching for the New York Gothams in 1884, according to MLB.

It's shocking to me anytime someone breaks a strikeout-related record in 2021 and the previous record was set longer than a couple months ago.

It's shocking to me anytime someone breaks a strikeout-related record in 2021 and the previous record was set longer than a couple months ago.

Just five years ago, in 2016:

Total MLB hits: 42,276
Total MLB strikeouts: 38,982

2021, projected over a full season:

Total MLB hits: 38,697
Total MLB strikeouts: 43,073

What was infinitely more shocking was Friday night's Yankees-Astros game, when the two teams struck out only six times each, with no audible trash can sounds coming from either dugout.

What’s more shocking to me is he went from striking out everybody to striking out nobody. Finished the game with 6 innings, and 9 strikeouts. Talk about a times through the order penalty.

Yet another oddity - the previous record was held by three pitchers who each mowed down eight consecutive position players only to blink when they got to the 9th slot, presumably a pitcher (all were NL/NL matchups but I didn't check the box scores).

Nothing could be more 2021; K record set by a pitcher I never heard of.

I was at a Cubs Convention and Jim Deshaies was asked this very question. He noted that the Dodgers pinch hit for the pitcher so it was a position player who snapped his streak - the immortal Larry See. Here's the play-by-play confirming Deshaies' memory.

Another exciting K record!

I've totally heard of Pablo Lopez. He was the guy who got ejected after hitting Acuna to open the game a couple weeks ago.

#7 And then thought about it and evidently decided that starting the game with a K rather than a baserunner was more likely to work well. And since that worked ...

Quality start, baby!

And now of course he's out with a right rotator cuff strain, to the misfortunate of not only himself & the Marlins but also my fantasy team.
