Marlins player with COVID-19 says MLB switching to bubble plan for 2020 season is ‘a good idea’

Outfielder Harold Ramirez was reportedly one of the club’s players who tested positive in recent days. Ramirez, 25, told a Spanish television program on Wednesday, that he’s the only person on the Marlins currently experiencing symptoms, including a cough and body aches. In his interview, Ramirez advocated for the idea of a one-location “bubble” for the 2020 Major League Baseball, saying that it could help avoid an outbreak like this.

A bubble requires finding a location for a bubble (or more likely multiple bubbles), doing a lot of prep work, and then getting everyone into the bubble and quarantining them for a couple of weeks while testing left and right. So realistically that means shutting down the season for ~3 weeks, then starting back up. I guess if they locate the bubble in FL and AZ (or TX or southern CA or Hawaii or Cuba or wherver) then they can play all winter if they want. Otherwise the 60 game season becomes a 40 game season.

You can bet Rob Manfred is considering this option. Cut player payroll by another 33% and still reap the full playoff windfall. Maybe expand the playoffs even more while we're at it. Use a 32-team bracket with top record in each league getting a first-round bye.

Better yet, expand to 48 teams for the playoffs.

They could even let the Rockford Peaches and Racine Belles play.

It hit 119 in Phoenix yesterday, and when I went to bed at 10 PM it was still 106.

IF they bubble, they probably do shift it to a tournament-style set up due to the time it takes to set up the bubble.

As noted, good potential bubbles for Aug/Sept exist in Chi/Milw and DC/Balt/Philly ... and I suppose LA/Ana/SD would work. Additional AAA and MLB stadiums not too far away. And of course the Rangers are sitting on 2 MLB stadiums right now. Once you get to playoffs/Oct then maybe you have to shift the Midwest bubble to warm weather/domed sites. But I agree shifting to a bubble right now would be a challenge ... though I suppose better the challenge arise just one week in rather than in the middle.

FWIW, the Australian sports seem to have ended up in a near-bubble. That wasn't how they started by the Melbourne outbreak has led to more border closures and now Queensland is restricting people from Sydney as well. So the teams are scrambling to get over the Qld, SA or WA borders before they close where it seems like they will have to stay for the rest of the season.

Isn't the old stadium in Arlington being ripped up and retrofitted for other sports?

No, Arlington Stadium was demolished in 1994.

Oh, maybe you mean the slightly used Ballpark? That’s already an XFL/soccer facility.

I've said it in multiple other threads. The obvious place for a bubble is some place in New Zealand. Yes there are some hurdles to overcome but even with a really long quarantine they'll actually finish the season.

Old Globe Life whatever it's called now has a giant section of seats in left field. It's 250 to straightaway left now, with a weird gap along the foul line.

I'd pay money to watch someone hit a ball into that gap - the left fielder can't see what the runner is going and vice versa.

All they'll need to do is build enough baseball fields to play.

Well you don't have to worry about stands. You have time while they're in quarantine.

Why not three bubbles: East, Central, and West?

You’d want 5 bubbles with 6 teams each. You can play 3 games per day at a stadium: 9am, 2pm, 7pm. Add a rule that if the game is tied after an inning in which more than 4:15 has elapsed that the game is declared a tie. And with nobody in the stands, the 9am and 2pm broadcasts can be delayed without the game info getting leaked. But it’s not really possible for a stadium to host more than 3 games per day.

Marlins To Resume Season On Tuesday:
Major League Baseball released a statement this afternoon providing updates on a number of clubs, including the Marlins, who have been out of action for the last week after a COVID-19 outbreak within the organization. As of now, Miami is set to resume its season on Tuesday with a four-game series against the Orioles in Baltimore, which will take place over three days and include a doubleheader. The Marlins will be the designated “home” team for two of those games.
. . .
Meanwhile, the Phillies and Yankees will begin a four-game home-and-home series on Monday. The Phils were also sidelined this week after potential exposure to the coronavirus during last weekend’s series against the Marlins. However, it appears that Philadelphia has avoided the worst-case scenario, with MLB revealing that two of the three positive tests in the Phillies organization appear to have been false positives. No players have tested positive for COVID-19 since the team’s last contact with the Marlins on Sunday.
Beginning to look like on-field transmission across teams isn’t that easy.
