Rojas, 34 next month, has been a high-contact, solid-defense shortstop for the Marlins for a long time, and although he may not be an everyday starter for the Dodgers, his righty bat might pair nicely in a time-share with Lux’s lefty bat (and Lux can man other positions when he’s not at short). This is a floor-raising move for a team that already had an incredibly strong floor.
It’s a good move for the Dodgers (and their pitchers), and they’ll part with shortstop prospect Jacob Amaya, who is ranked 15th in a very good Dodgers system:

Not a terrible trade, though with the Marlins, it's another clear case of threading water.
His daily challenge with the game weaver game today
I like Rojas for the Dodgers. Pretty much a perfect fit once they ended up not grabbing one of the top 4 FA shortstops. But Amaya is likely to be just as good and cheaper, and 5 more years of control: Steamer projects him for a 91 OPS+ compared to 93+ for Rojas, and Amaya is supposedly a plus defender similar to Rojas as well.
So I love this for the Marlins, and I think Amaya is probably their primary SS by season's end, if not immediately.
This is a bit of a hijack, so feel free to ignore (not that this thread might not be dead anyway) but: the Dodgers’ moves might be predicated on trying to get under the luxury tax to avoid repeater penalties. (This would make sense to me as a thing to do but of course depends on ownership’s willingness to spend) - which was complicated with the reinstatement and non-trade of Bauer.
This struck me as an excellent opportunity for a willing team to buy prospects. Acquire Bauer from LA and immediately release him and get paid by LA to do so. So, I wonder:
- do you think MLB told LA “we will consider this an attempt at subverting the rules” (or whatever) and that they would not allow it?
- if not, what do you think LA would have had to give up in order for a team to do this? (Different answers depending on how much salary LA covered)?
Statcast put him 12 outs, 9 runs above-average in 2022 ... #15 in all MLB, #5 among SS. It was kinda out of nowhere -- looks like they rated him as average for the years before that.
