Marlins trade for catcher Jacob Stallings

The Marlins solidified their catching situation on Monday, acquiring Jacob Stallings from the Pirates for right-hander Zach Thompson and prospects Kyle Nicolas and Connor Scott, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The trade was pending physicals, and neither club has confirmed the report.

Stallings, who turns 32 on Dec. 22, is the reigning National League Gold Glove Award recipient after recording an MLB-tying 21 defensive runs saved, regardless of position. He also finished as the only Major League backstop not to allow a passed ball in 104 games behind the plate. Stallings’ 8.8 FRM—FanGraphs’ calculation of catcher framing value—tied for the best mark in the NL with the Brewers’ Omar Narváez. According to Baseball-Reference, Stallings accumulated 3 WAR in 2021. For an organization with young but talented pitching like the Marlins, placing an emphasis on a plus defender at catcher is a wise one.

Pirates currently have no catchers on the major league roster. Casey Stengel's assertion may be tested.

Good deal for Marlins. I watched a lot of his games this year. Excellent catcher

.........and so, the umpteenth Pirate rebuild continues onward.
42 years since the last WS appearance and who knows how many more years before another?
At 76, I doubt I ever get to see my Buccos in another WS.

This didn't age well

Cherington pointed to the development of All-Star center fielder Bryan Reynolds, the steadying influence of veteran catcher Jacob Stallings and the brief late-season cameos of prospects like 23-year-old shortstop Oneil Cruz and 21-year-old pitcher Roansy Contreras as proof that change is coming.

Hey he warned you that change was coming...

Well, crap, the 2022 Pirates will now be unsteady.

The Pirates have signed catcher Roberto Perez, so now their pitchers won't have to scramble to chase down every pitch at the backstop.

But will they be steady?

I'm 40--meaning the Pirates have not played in the World Series in my lifetime--and I doubt I'll live to see that happen.

Trading a 32-year-old catcher who has just played 100 games for the first time in his career for prospects really isn't the worst idea in the world.

I am a Cincinnati fan, and I hate to say it, but I think that the Pirates and the Reds will be the next two Original 16 "curse" teams--getting into 50-80 year droughts, joining ofc Cleveland. The Padres (my second favorite team) and Pilots/Brewers are at 52 years, and the Mariners are at 44 without even a WS appearance. I think the vibe is a little different with expansion teams. If you count Texas back to Senators II, they are at 60.

The Reds won a World Series 31 years ago, which is not particularly cursed in a 30-team universe.

Sure, but I think they have the, uhh, potential for it to go on for a long while. Hope not.

I was texting my dad about the trade and he wrote back that Reynolds is going to be the Roland Agni of the Pirates. Google explained the reference as I had no clue
