Martín Prado retires

Martín Prado, a 14-year veteran has announced his retirement. It was reported last fall that he was strongly considering hanging it up, but he was presumably waiting out the offseason to make sure no one gave him a call.

Prado hit a mere .233/.265/.294 with two home runs and 15 RBI over 104 games and a -1.3 WAR with the Marlins in 2019. He’s 36 and that was his third straight year of decline. It was probably time for him to say goodbye to life as an active player and hello to coaching or front office work or whatever else he feels like doing.

Which is not to take away from what was a pretty spiffy career.

One of my favorites, a scrappy, hustling ballplayer with good bat control and doubles power. He wasn't fast, but he was a pretty smart baserunner (not much of a basestealer), and he wasn't a Gold Glover, but he'd play wherever he was asked to play on the diamond. Never much of a prospect, he reached the majors as a backup infielder who couldn't really play shortstop. He hit enough to get some more looks, and eventually he started hitting so much that the team began looking for places to play him. When the Braves traded for Dan Uggla after the 2010 season, Prado had just come off a season in which he'd started the All-Star Game at second base, but they figured that Prado could always just play left field. Then in 2012, when Andrelton Simmons' injury left Tyler Pastornicky and Paul Janish as the team's best options at shortstop, they'd occasionally just stick Prado at short and hope for the best. All the while he was shuttling back and forth between third base and left field, as an everyday player with an average over .300. If it bothered him, he never said anything about it publicly.

I always got the impression that he was very respected with the Braves, and I know that the Marlins let him manage the team for game 162 one year. In the past I might have pegged him for a future manager, but I don't really know what kind of players become managers anymore.

Tip of the cap to a hard-working, underrated player who built a pretty damn impressive career out of not much of a start.
