Math! 3 triples + 2 singles + 1 double = 0 runs

But before all of that, in 1890, Joshua Mercer Goar executed perhaps the most impossible feat in baseball history against the Anderson Tigers in the Indiana State League. Not even Houdini or MacGyver could’ve escaped from the situation the right-hander put himself into.

Goar came into a game and allowed six hits—three triples, one double and two singles ... but he gave up exactly zero runs.

Zero. Nothing. Zilch. Think about that: three men got to third base and none of them scored! Even after the next three guys hit a double and two singles!

How does something this ridiculous happen? Well, according to this snippet from The Toronto Globe, this is how. As Samuel L. Jackson might say, hold onto your butts.

Quite the major league stat line - 15-1/3 IP, and 40 hits and 9 walks, giving him a WHIP of 3.20...

I probably read this 40 years ago in one of the dozens of old baseball books I read (it seems slightly familiar), but it's still fantastic.

Was Ron Washington coaching third base?

Was Herb Washington one of the baserunners?

And then, with the bases loaded, Frank Fear hit a "vicious" liner -- as only someone named Frank Fear could -- to right. It hit Fatz in the arm while he was off the bag. Fatz was out, but, according to MLB Rule 5.05, Fear is still awarded a single.
You're killing me, Fatz!

Fear is still awarded a single.
I was under the impression that Fear Strikes Out.

I've known this as an old baseball riddle - how can a team get six hits in an inning without scoring - the answer is two outs somewhere on the basepaths, then the sixth batter hits a ball that strikes a runner, he gets credit for a hit but the runner is out.

That's what happened here, though all the extra-base hits do make it that much wackier.

Is there any way this is a true story?

#8 19th century journalism required that anything that was printed be verified.

Yeah, implausible, but if any pitcher was up to the task of serving up that many meatballs it was him. And kamikaze baserunning certainly happened back then. Wasn't even crazy given the standards of fielding.

This is so great.

Idle and unimportant curiosity: In our modern base-running statistics, does the runner on third get penalized for not advancing ANY bases on a double?

Can you still give out Primeys around here?

I too had known this as a riddle but thought it was just a hypothetical, in the same way that a pitcher could throw a complete game without throwing a pitch (it's easier now than it was a few years ago).

But knowing this riddle prevented my team from being no-hit in our fast pitch softball league a few years ago. Our only official hit came from the runner being hit by a batted ball (though it was due more to runner age and incompetence than a vicious liner). I was the only one who knew the scoring rule.
