Matt Holliday resigns; McEwing hired as bench coach

The St. Louis Cardinals have hired Joe McEwing as their bench coach after Matt Holliday resigned the position.

McEwing, 50, a native of the Philadelphia metro area, comes to St. Louis after spending 15 years coaching with the White Sox organization, most recently as the third base coach from 2021-22, also serving as the bench coach from 2017-20 under manager Rick Renteria….

Holliday, 42, who was hired by the Cardinals as the bench coach on November 6, 2022, after serving as the volunteer coach for Oklahoma State University, has resigned from his post. Daniel Nicolaisen will be added to the Major League staff as the third hitting coach. Patrick “Packy” Elkins will be responsible for gameday duties, planning for both hitting and pitching.

who was hired by the Cardinals as the bench coach on November 6, 2022

2 months including Thansgiving and Christmas.

I think my shortest official job was 2 weeks, maybe it was 4.

EDIT: Just in case ... I hope everything is OK with Holliday and this isn't related to a diagnosis or similar.

It’s about time for a change. STL was winless during Holliday’s tenure.

Sounds like he took the job because it was too good of an opportunity to pass up, and then had second thoughts (presumably about the work schedule, and travel, if he wanted to spend more time with his family, as he says). Good for him that he resigned now, before he got into a situation that would make him (and possibly the team) miserable. Being in a work situation where you just don't want to be there is a nightmare at any job, and I'm sure that's magnified tremendously in a situation as pressure packed as MLB.

Matt's son Jackson was the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB draft last summer (by Baltimore).

Matt also made $160M in his career.

To me, the real surprise is that he took the job in the first place.....

Matt also has a son coming up behind Jackson. This whole thing seemed weird considering how his family is lined up to be in the game as well. Maybe a few years down the road it makes more sense.

Players like to be around the game. He was actually a coach at Oklahoma State before the Cardinals hired him.

Josh Holliday, Matt's brother, is the head coach at Oklahoma State. Their dad was the head coach there before Josh.

No biggie, RoyalsRetro, but your link doesn't match the excerpt. The link results in a MLB.com story leading off with these three paragraphs:
ST. LOUIS -- A Cardinals team delighted to add longtime franchise favorite Matt Holliday as its bench coach in November had to replace him on Thursday following his resignation.

Holliday, who will turn 43 on Sunday, recently informed the club that he preferred to remain in his native Stillwater, Okla., with his family instead of devoting himself fully to the rigors of an MLB season, a team official said on Thursday. Holliday -- who starred for the Cardinals as a player from 2009-16, won a World Series with St. Louis in '11 and was inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame last August -- was hired as bench coach in November to replace Skip Schumaker, who became the manager of the Marlins.

Joe McEwing, who starred briefly with the Cardinals in 1998-99 and was dubbed “Super Joe” by the fan base, was hired to replace Holliday, the team announced. McEwing, 50, spent the past 15 seasons coaching in the White Sox organization, most recently as the third-base coach from 2021-22 after serving as bench coach from '17-20.
