Matt Vasgersian leaving ESPN’s ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ booth

Play-by-player Matt Vasgersian informed ESPN executives that he is leaving his position on “Sunday Night Baseball,” The Post has learned.

After four years teamed with Alex Rodriguez, Vasgersian wants to focus on new, pending deals with MLB Network, and potentially expand his work on Angels’ regional telecasts.

“I decided to call it a wrap on ‘Sunday Night Baseball,’” Vasgersian said when reached by The Post. “I can’t do everything I enjoy with MLB Network and the Angels, while still being away for nearly 30 weekends a year.”

Can't find video of it anymore, but here's my favorite Matt Vasgersian moment.

I think this is what broke what little will he had to live left: "Alex Cora has the Alex Cora effect on this magical Red Sox team"

I thoroughly enjoyed his run as Milwaukee's PBP guy in the mid late 90s. His shtick was fresh and fairly risqué (a bit sophomoric to be sure) with countless inside jokes for regular viewers. I still find him pretty good all around. Managed to recover from his dubious stint doing XFL. Has made the rounds in baseball that's for sure.

As far as bland PBP guys go, Vasgersian's actually pretty good. He keeps it moving, he keeps it light, and he has a good voice. He's the best PBP guy the Angels have had since Rory Markas nearly 20 years ago, and I hope he takes the Angels gig full time.

Hmm, too bad the problem with Sunday Night Baseball is not Matt announcing I can tell you that. I did not last through the pregame when I switched over to the ESPN2 Statcast as it was more laid back and way easier on the ears. I am shocked ESPN has not used Sean McDonough paired with a personable athlete for this slot (i.e. NOT AROD). LOL

I'm a little surprised at McDonough not getting used more also.

Having said that, this is a bad week to be giving McDonough props. He apparently was making fun of Farhan Zaedi's name during the Wild Card game. That seems out of the blue a bit and one of the Sox announcers (Will Flemming) is the brother of Giant announcer Dave Flemming so I wonder if there is a relationship there that makes it a little less bad.

McDonough is a GREAT announcer. He's scheduled to be the lead voice for the NHL on ESPN and he can do literally any sport. I'm not sure why he has never seemed to take that next big step forward into stardom.

He’s great with the Angels. He was very familiar, as he was the voice on the MLB The Show video game a while back. Still might be, though I haven’t bought a new update in years. He was the voice who called 1000+ homers for Brandon Wood in an alternate universe I played.

That seems like a really harmless play on words, although I've just read it rather than heard it. I wonder if it's just being associated with a failure - he was the lead voice on CBS's two-year run way back in the early nineties right before "The Baseball Network" (followed by Fox which has had MLB for a Long Freaking Time, longer than I think of the Fox network as having existed to be honest) - and why recycle him when you can find someone perceived as on the way up rather than hanging around.

(His having had that job means that he'll be preserved as calling the opening nightmare in Mr. Baseball forever, at least.)

Do Blue Jays fans have a warm reaction when they hear McDonough's voice because of '92 and '93?

I read a very interesting thing last night from someone with a middle eastern background addressing it. I couldn't find it with a quick search but it very eloquently laid out how insulting that kind of thing can be and how it can make people feel. It was really well written.

I'm a little sensitive to it I'll admit. Jose isn't a particularly weird name but growing up in a very whitebread part of Massachusetts in the late 1970s it really stood out. I remember kids making fun of me (pronouncing it "Josie" was the big one) and that hurt.

Sean McDonough is the son of the legendry Boston sportswriter (and occasional TV commentator) Will McDonough. I swear, there are monarchies that aren't as nepotistic as the sportscasting industry.

True. No other way to explain Joe Buck and Thom Brennaman.

Matt Vasgersian used to annoy me when he was on the MLB Network because he was a small-Hall guy & would whine anytime someone brought up a candidate who wasn’t a slam dunk Hall of Famer. But Vasgersian was also a diehard Oakland A’s fan like me so it all evened out
