HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Two double-headers today. The Cubs, those lucky so-and-sos, get to face Kershaw and Bauer the same day.

Both the Cubs and Dodgers rearranged their SPs for the series after the rainout yesterday. Bauer was moved up a day and now Beuhler goes tomorrow; regardless of the order, facing those 3 in one series sucks.

Cubs are countering with Hendricks (who's had good games against the Dodgers before but has been a batting practice level home run machine so far this year) and Keegan Thompson (making his first ever start, after making his ML debut Sunday and who was demoted yesterday but recalled today with the Cubs putting Arrieta on the IL); Alzolay was gonna pitch today, but was moved to tomorrow.

Cubs off to a great start against Kershaw - double, single, then a Javy walk (which is only his 2nd this year)...

The Cubs, those lucky so-and-sos . . .
I believe the word you’re looking for is “bastards”.

Kershaw doesn't have it today.
   7. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 02:41 PM (#6016890)
...then another single and bases clearing double.
   8. bunyon Posted: May 04, 2021 at 02:42 PM (#6016891)
Kershaw has been replaced by an alien.
   9. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 02:43 PM (#6016892)
Wow, that's a crazy stat. Only 2nd time in Kershaw's career he's given up 4 or more runs in the 1st inning; he gave up 5 in the 1st in a game in 2008.
   10. bunyon Posted: May 04, 2021 at 02:46 PM (#6016894)
It's a doubleheader so you need some innings but, geez, I'd pull him. He's aging and no reason to waste his remaining pitches on this dreck.
   11. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: May 04, 2021 at 02:56 PM (#6016897)

The bullpen has basically had two days off, but everyone pitched after Dustin May got hurt, and the game before that, they used five relievers. They're also scheduled to have a bullpen day Friday. They're getting squeezed, and need some starters to go deep.

The Dodgers have lost 10 of 14. May's done, Price is on IL, Graterol's on IL and getting an MRI today. The Dodgers' depth will keep them in it, but this is a good reminder that nothing is promised to anyone.
   12. salvomania Posted: May 04, 2021 at 03:02 PM (#6016899)
Just noticed Kershaw has the second-highest batting average in the Dodgers' first-game lineup.
   13. bunyon Posted: May 04, 2021 at 03:33 PM (#6016904)
If I was the Dodgers, I'd forfeit.
   14. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 03:34 PM (#6016905)
Just not the Dodgers (first half of the) day.
   15. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 04, 2021 at 03:41 PM (#6016908)
I remember another game where the Cubs got to Kershaw early while Hendricks shut down the Dodgers...there's definite precedent here.
   16. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 03:51 PM (#6016913)
I'm drawing a blank, care to remind me of which game you're talking about?
   17. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 04, 2021 at 04:18 PM (#6016921)
Man, that day was probably the most fun I've ever had at a baseball game.

And it feels like it was 20 years ago
   19. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 04, 2021 at 04:19 PM (#6016923)
And right up there with the most fun days I've had doing anything. Yeah, it seems like a different era now.
   20. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 04:24 PM (#6016925)
Since I haven't said it, yeah, totally agree. Just the emotions all day, it was a perfect day start to finish.
   21. Moses Taylor hashes out the rumpus Posted: May 04, 2021 at 04:37 PM (#6016931)
Is Javy day drinking?
   22. bunyon Posted: May 04, 2021 at 04:37 PM (#6016932)
If I was Baez, I'd retire.

no I am NOT kidding

...............

"May's done, Price is on IL, Graterol's on IL and getting an MRI today" - and Knebel, who looked briefly to be the 8th-inning guy, is on the 60-day IL (said to be a "lat" injury but no surgery)

Question: suppose the cardinals wanted to trade for Trevor Story and pair him up again with Arenado. I assume a package would have to look like Paul Dejong who has a couple years of control left, maybe a Daniel Ponce de Leon/Ron Gant and a top 10 prospect (walker). Thoughts ?

Baseball trade values has Dejong/Gant/walker as a pretty fair trade for Story. Cards would need to know they can sign him
   25. Shohei Brotani (formerly LA Hombre) Posted: May 04, 2021 at 05:35 PM (#6016942)
I can't believe I forgot about Cody Bellinger being out. This Dodger team is basically at 75% health... which is about where most teams are at when they're at 100%.
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: May 04, 2021 at 05:37 PM (#6016944)
discussion may be joined by Mets family members and friends in the revived Self-Immolation Thread, but deGrom is NOT starting tonight's game in St Louis:

Jeff Passan

Jacob deGrom’s injury, deemed by one source as right-side tightness, isn’t believed to be serious. Another source said the expectation is deGrom will miss only one start. Still, anything having to do with deGrom’s health is taken extraordinarily seriously — and understandably so.

My first thought was that no team would be willing to trade for Ron Gant, but then again, it's the Rockies...
   28. The Duke Posted: May 04, 2021 at 05:44 PM (#6016947)
Cardinals get a rare bit of good news in missing Degroms turn. They are a team designed to be beaten badly by Degrom
   29. The Duke Posted: May 04, 2021 at 06:01 PM (#6016949)
Dejong has 4.5 years left on his contract (including two club options) so that solves the SS position during the rebuild. Gant gives them another backend rotation arm. Walker replaces the draft pick for story.

I bet story would consider a trade and sign deal if he plays with Arenado again

I know it’s a day late, but a shout-out is warranted to Hector Neris, for Nerising a 5 out, 40 pitch save yesterday. It was excruciating torture to watch.
   32. stanmvp48 Posted: May 04, 2021 at 06:39 PM (#6016955)
I wonder what the record for most at bats to start a season without a walk is. Rockies third baseman Josh Fuentes (200/198/288) is up to 80..
   33. Walt Davis Posted: May 04, 2021 at 07:20 PM (#6016963)
#32 ... Neyer used to track that in a season. Dunston was always a good candidate but a bench player by that time. His longest season-starting streak seems to be 83 PA. Not a "start the year" record but in 1999, Dunston walked twice in his first 29 PA. He then went (at least) 226 PA without a walk. Very impressive.

Stathead does games not PAs but I can sort by ABs ... and I thought there was a way to do "start of season" but apparently not. Anyway ... Fernando 1984-88 has the all-time record with 328 AB (and I assume some SH) without a walk. Mariano Duncan 94-95 is next with 314, Dunston 99-00 at 308. The famous Rob Piccolo had separate streaks of 303 and 297. Ozzie Guillen made it to 230. The longest active streak appears to be Hanser Alberto dating back to last yer at 127 AB. Given Hanser is one of the weakest hitters in the game, he really should take a walk now and then.

There's probably a better way to do that in stathead but I don't know it.

EDIT: Fernando holds the expansion era record, I didn't check the all-time record.
   34. Howie Menckel Posted: May 04, 2021 at 07:51 PM (#6016968)
Fuentes' teammate Daza has 0 BB in 67 AB and is gaining ground.

yes, I own both players. and yes I am in last place.
   35. salvomania Posted: May 04, 2021 at 07:55 PM (#6016970)
I thought Gary DiSarcina was the poster boy for not walking to start a season...
   36. stanmvp48 Posted: May 04, 2021 at 07:57 PM (#6016972)
Well the Giants just walked him in a 12-4 game
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: May 04, 2021 at 08:22 PM (#6016977)
Incredibly, the Giants just surrendered the first walk of the season to Fuentes AND Daza, as consecutive batters.
   38. salvomania Posted: May 04, 2021 at 08:34 PM (#6016981)
I thought Gary DiSarcina was the poster boy for not walking to start a season...

He had a couple of nice streaks to start a season: 54 plate appearances, in '93, and 61 plate appearances in '98. He ended his career on a nice note, with 1 walk in 41 PA in 2000.
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: May 04, 2021 at 08:56 PM (#6016984)
Mets-Cards rained out, let's play two tomorrow

Heyward takes Bauer deep. 1-0 Cubs.
   41. Walt Davis Posted: May 04, 2021 at 09:23 PM (#6016990)
DiSarcina definitely showed up in the all-time list (which wasn't start of season if that wasn't clear) with a crazy long streak or two. But Picciolo with 2 streaks around 300 will hopefully never be challenged again. And he started 1979 off with 111 PA. I didn't check any of his other years.
   42. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 04, 2021 at 10:03 PM (#6016994)
It’s funny, I was just listening to an episode of Effectively Wild this afternoon where they had a Statblast about games in which the starting pitcher gave up fewer hits than he got. And lo and behold Dylan Cease is doing just that tonight, having given up only one hit through five innings and gotten hits in each of his first three professional at-bats (!).
   43. The Duke Posted: May 04, 2021 at 11:00 PM (#6017001)
Baez with the game-tying homer!!! Cubs are going to take two from LA

So glad the runner on second rule protected us from an unprecedented 10-inning game
