McCarver opts out of Cardinals telecasts this season

Cardinals Hall of Famer Tim McCarver, who also is a Hall of Fame broadcaster, said Tuesday night he had decided not to travel from Florida to do Cardinals telecasts for Fox Sports Midwest, even though the travel would be to St. Louis for every game.

In an interview last week with the Post-Dispatch, McCarver said he was “ready to go” for the 2020 telecasts.

“My doctor obviously had an input in this,” said McCarver, 78, on Tuesday. “He recommended that I not work because of the travel and because of the obvious things (the coronavirus).

“I told him I started my Cardinal career (in 1959) with a mask on and it is not my intention to end it with a different one with a different texture,” said McCarver. “I got a laugh out of it from him.”

I didnt know he was doing Cardinal games still. He retired from Fox a few years ago, that seems like a much easier schedule - fewer games - than broadcasting a team’s regular season games. Looking at wiki, he was doing part time work for the Cards, 30-40 games per season.

yes, IIRC he was doing some select weekend home games and stuff like that.

i like ol' tim, but he suffered from the usual old timer problems, being in love with 'the right way' to play, BITGOD, etc. and he could drone on a little.

but it's tim, and he's a connection to my fave ballplayer from my youth, bob gibson so i didn't mind hearing about 'gibby' and the cards from the 60s.

he's doing the right thing. this COVID business is just getting worse.

Tim was much better doing local games vs national. He’s less frenetic. The cardinals announcers are so bad now that McCarver is actually one of the better ones. For a team that had the two Bucks, Harry caray and bob costas at various times, the pickings are quite slim now.

Does seem silly for anyone in their 70's or beyond to do any baseball this year unless they set up broadcasting from their homes (possible). The risk is just too high especially for guys who should have lots in the bank by now.
