Meeting MadBum: D-backs relish big left-hander’s presence

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona manager Torey Lovullo had plenty of praise for newly acquired left-hander Madison Bumgarner, calling the four-time All-Star exactly what his team needs at the top of the rotation.

Then came the follow-up question: Does that mean Bumgarner would start on opening day?

“I kind of walked myself into that one,” Lovullo acknowledged with a grin.

Lovullo wasn’t ready to name an opening day starter six weeks before the first game, but said he’d be “an idiot” not to consider Bumgarner for the task.

It’s strange seeing articles like this concerning Bumgarner and a different NL West team.

But does he still have the mustard?

Most over-rated starter ever?

Morris, Catfish, Dave Stewart? MadBum has been a very good but (usually) not great regular season starter who has consistently turned it on at the right time -- 0.25 ERA in the WS (36 innings, 3 rings) is gonna draw some attention.

Also 10th in IP for the 2010s despite not really being called up until mid-season 2010 and missing big chunks of 2017-18. Unless you count Verlander, he might be the only "contemporary" pitcher with a decent shot at 3500+ innings (which could of course get derailed tomorrow).

Anyway he only signed for 5/$85 so it's not like anybody was expecting CYAs at this point. And while there were some (me) surprised he signed for that little, nobody was pretending he was in line for Cole/Strasburg money so he's not THAT over-rated.

Nolan Ryan pretty much owns that title...

But everytime I think of Bumgarner I think of Bill James concept of pitcher rankings somewhat equivalent to tennis and golf rankings... which is something I thought was a great idea... but if it still exists, it's behind a paywall, which effectively makes it a useless concept.... Bumgarner did well because of his post season and it was a great concept, and it would be something I would love to see eventually enter the mainstream.

Very cool... thanks

Now it just to be mainstreamed...

On the James list ... I ain't saying he's wrong, I'm saying it's kinda depressing if Porcello really is a top 50 starter. Rich Hill and Cole Hamels are at 41 and 42 and it's not clear either of them can still pitch. Lester is still #60 (Lester, #2 starter?) and the Cubs have 4 in the top 62 (what me worry?) CC should still be flinging, the Twins just signed Chacin cheap and he's #92 while Kluber has tumbled to #138, just making the cut before a massive list of #142s.
