Mets broadcaster Ron Darling announces cancer diagnosis, hopes to return to booth in a month

Mets broadcaster Ron Darling has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, he announced Monday. He released the following statement:

“After the removal of the mass on my chest along with further tests, I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My doctors have said they are optimistic that the cancer is treatable and that I would be back on air talking baseball in the next month or so. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their continued support.”

Best wishes for him and his loved ones.

Thyroid cancer in general is very easy to catch early and has very good survival rates.* So best wishes to Ron, and fingers crossed that they caught it early and that it's one of the easier to treat varieties. It's never, ever good to have cancer, but if you're getting diagnosed with cancer then this is definitely better than the vast majority of others.

* 5 year rates above 90% overall even when including metastatic cancers, except for anaplastic cancers which have really scary numbers -
