Mets broadcasters hilariously explain possum still at large in Athletics’ television booth

Apparently, the possum’s presence has been known since the Athletics’ Opening Day game against the Los Angeles Angels, and the animal has remained at large despite traps set by the team’s employees. It apparently hasn’t hurt anyone, but the stench left by its, um, business was noticeable enough that SNY opted for a different office for the day.

Here’s the story:

COHEN: We are not in the regular visitors television booth tonight.

DARLING: I came here and went to the booth, and people grabbed me, almost tackled me and pushed me into this booth.

COHEN: So when we came here last September, we were told the tale of the RingCentral Coliseum possum, who apparently makes a home in the visitors TV booth ... so the Angels played here at the beginning of the season. They were the first team in. Wayne Randazzo, our friend, is now the television voice of the Angels, and he told us in the opening game of the season, the possum who apparently lives somewhere in the wall behind that visitors TV booth made an appearance during the game in their booth.

DARLING: Was it, like, nibbling at them?

COHEN: It was just crawling around, minding its own possum business, walking across the counter. He wasn’t trying to horn in on the broadcast. He was just doing his possum things. Anyway, so they set traps for this possum, but he’s proved elusive ... [The Mets television tech crew] walk in the booth and were immediately met by the stench of the possum having, you know, done his business in the booth. Apparently, the booth reeked so badly of possum leavings that an executive decision was made to move us to this booth, which is somewhat smaller and has a few impediments, like there’s a pole right in front of me.

DARLING: So we had to choose between possum and pole.

COHEN: And I chose pole.

A day will come in the future when this broadcasting team, like all broadcasting teams, will no longer be with us. That will be a very sad day.

I call the big one "Bitey."

Possums are horrifying. I used to have one come up on my deck that I could see through the sliding glass door, and it’s truly like staring into the face of madness. There’s a non-zero chance that they are extraterrestrials of some kind, and if forced, I’d bet on the interdimensional variety.

No sir, I don’t like ‘em.

The best booth in the game. The only thing that would have made this exchange any better was if Keith were working.

If the possum has survived since last September, it has a food source beyond what would be available in the now mostly-abandoned visitor’s broadcast booth. That’s where they need to set the traps.

Possums will eat rats, mice and cockroaches. I'd say they're probably set at the Coliseum.

It could be far worse than they're saying: that "possum" could easily be an Oakland Raiders refugee that's been holding out since 2019. Those Japanese guys lived for decades in the South Pacific before someone came to take them home, so there is precedent.

OMG, has anyone seen Stephen Piscotty since last September??????

Where you find one possum.

Dreadful critters and an invasive species in NZ so you're encouraged to kill them. I had them in between floors in my house in winter for a few years. I've killed a few by hand (used to have me a good possum-whacking stick) and trapped a couple more. I saw a young one the other day, gonna get some more traps. (No evidence yet that I've noticed in the house or garage but I think they ate the apples off my tree.)

Two things I've discovered. (1) They really will freeze up in bright light at night. (2) They are (surprise!) really good at playing possum.

(For those that don't know, NZ has practically no native mammals -- I think it's one species of seal that probably swam here a long time ago and two species of bats that probably flew here a long time ago. So evertyhing else is invasive -- including humans of course -- has no natural predators and highly destructive to natural NZ flora and birds. In the absence of predators, most Kiwi birds evolved to be morons that live on the ground -- pet dogs and especially cats allowed outdoors do a lot of damage. If you see a critter in the road when driving, speed up.)

Perhaps the Athletics should have a Possum Night promotion? Possum-themed caps or t-shirts? Attendance has been dreadful, so it may be worth a shot.

Oh ####, that's where Richie Incognito is.

Possums eat disease-carrying mice and rats, cockroaches, lyme-ridden tics, and poisonous snakes.

People really just love killing shit more than anything.

Depressing, but true. Possums are pretty cool, actually, but just don't mess with them. Of course you don't want one in the booth with you.
But then I'm the kind of person that swerves while riding my bike to avoid running over bugs.

Far more possum apologists in this thread than I was expecting. Guys, sometimes you can judge a book by it’s cover, I mean just look! Would you want that crawling around where you work or sleep?

uglier creature - possum, or bat?

A very young possum must have been orphaned near my house years ago. It seemed to want either me or my cat to be its adoptive mother, and was hanging around sadly, trying to get our attention. I was trying to figure out what to do with it and then it was gone. That thing was very cute and very sad, and likely came to an unfortunate end.

I blame Banta for making me relive this experience.

#9 - wrong animal. different order. the virginia opossum in america is generally chill, theyre just scavengers and you can shoo them away. yes, people using possum when they mean opossum isnt helping.

A Pest of Plague Proportions (That's not my editorializing, that's the NZ Dept of Conservation)

An ecological nightmare (again, not me, NZ Geographic)

In their natural habitat, leave them alone. For example, they are a protected species in Oz (unless they're in your house). NZ is not their natural habitat.

And yes, young possums are very cute. Steve Garvey was probably a cute baby.

Tell me it's the Oakland Coliseum without telling me it's the Oakland Coliseum.
