Mets don’t know where Yoenis Cespedes is, team announces in statement

The Mets released a concerning statement on their star slugger, Yoenis Cespedes, who did not show up to the ballpark for their Sunday afternoon game in Atlanta.

“As of game time, Yoenis Céspedes has not reported to the ballpark today,” general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement. “He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence. Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful.”

The team does not have any reason to believe Cespedes’ safety is at risk, according to one person familiar with the situation.

Maybe he got a ride from Pascual Perez.

Some version of “I thought it was a night game” is the standard excuse.

Now we learn Cespedes is NOT missing but just missing from work. An unexcused absence.

So clearly the first Mets statement wasn’t intended to spark panic for the man’s well-being, which it understandably did, but instead just try to embarrass him.

This franchise is trash.

BVW will be part of the post-game Zoom conference, which will be more compelling viewing than the Mets' performance for the first eight innings of this game.

Van Wagenen said Cespedes has opted out of the season due to concerns about the virus.

From everything I read, Céspedes is a pretty mercurial person, so his opting out does not surprise me.

Looking at his career stats, he has been an above average Major Leaguer, but I thought he was going to be a genuine superstar. Alas.

The Jerry Manuel Mets would just slide Billy Hamilton into the DH role.

Maybe this is finally good news for Dominic Smith.

Cespedes watches an epically bad Mets week and decides that, in the famous words of poet laureate Micheal Ray Richardson: THIS SHIP BE SINKING

bu bye

After he broke his ankles doing some sort of unauthorized activity on his ranch, they restructured his contract. I think he had a $6 million salary for this season, reduced again because of COVID. There was a $5 million bonus for being on the opening day roster but who knows what that was reduced to. And with the 60-game season, he probably had no shot at hitting most of the PA-based incentives that could have earned him significantly more than that. So no surprising he didn’t think playing was worth it.

Mets PR, minutes after the GM spoke about transparency with the public, made one player available for an interview after the game: rookie starting pitcher David Peterson.

Were bonuses subject to the agreement?

“As of game time, Yoenis Céspedes has not reported to the ballpark today,”

Is the word "today" really necessary?
   13. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: August 02, 2020 at 07:12 PM (#5967582)
I can’t imagine he would have gotten the full $5 million bonus just for being on the opening day roster when guys who were supposed to be making $10 million for the whole season are getting less than that.

The Athletic:

A source told The Athletic that Céspedes has a family member with a pre-existing condition, and his calculations for playing this season had changed given the outbreaks with other teams.

Maybe he got hypnotized and was stressed out by constantly filling out TPS reports.

Might not be just about health - Cespedes Frustrated With Mets Before Opt Out:
But multiple sources confirmed that twice in the first nine games of the season, Cespedes confronted Mets officials concerned about playing time and that he would be kept out of lineups to prevent him from reaching lucrative performance bonuses. One of those came Saturday, when Cespedes first talked to Luis Rojas and then Brodie Van Wagenen about his playing status and bonuses. Then Cespedes knew before the buses left for Truist Park on Sunday he was not in the starting lineup and he never showed for the game against the Braves, triggering a bizarre day even for the Mets.
Watching that bullpen could also be frustrating.

Cespedes also reportedly talked to some teammates about his decision on Saturday night, but not management.

Dave Kingman, who hit 35 HR in 1986 and had a career OPS+ of 115 that slipped in his last 2 seasons, was so annoying that he didn't get another contract offer - so he retired.

Cespedes, with a career OPS+ of 125 and who is coming off a nothing season and with far more injury issues, might want to check in with Dave.

I hear he lives a mellow life in the Las Vegas area, at age 71.

as for Cespedes, good riddance. they have plenty of other talented options offensively (for once).

With the DH, he might have a point about PT but, prior to Sun, he had been held out just one game and nobody except Alonso had substantially more PA. Most 34 year-olds would be thrilled to start 8 out of 10 games. He's not helped by the fact he's gotten off to a slow start (in his whopping 34 PA) while Davis, Nimmo, Conforto and Smith (12 PA) have all smacked the ball plenty.

Yoenis's first walkoff since 2016, one wag noted on Twitter.

14 may be true (may). 17 is spin.

Really, all sides involved in PR issues such as these spin like crazy. The fact that the Mets are so incompetent and Céspedes is a pretty weird cat should not disabuse us of what's going on here.

   24. Adam Starblind Posted: August 03, 2020 at 12:20 PM (#5967658)
The odds of Cespedes being productive this year, at his age, after missing so much time, were very slim. They're better off with their other DH options.

guh, meant to post that line yesterday. not sure if I owe a Coke for just my thoughts, however.

All things considered, the Mets are probably better of figuring out whether the others guys on his team can play or not. Also, there is porbably a pretty good chance that this season is not going to be completed anyway.
   27. depletion Posted: August 03, 2020 at 03:40 PM (#5967708)
Agree with Ruslan. Team should be thinking strongly about getting ready for 2021: testing Dom and J. D. in the outfield, trying out other closers, Diaz in setup. Most important is to keep everyone healthy for next year, which is not a given

We're talking about the Mets here, people. (I'm shocked that they didn't have any players test positive for COVID decades ago...)
